Big changes at the gym

Monday, January 14, 2013

Well, I finally went back to the gym today. I realized that I've been paying for that membership, and I'm not so wealthy that I can afford to throw away $30 a month for no reason! Plus, with no insurance, being fit and healthy is critical!

So I dropped the girls off, and hit the gym.

I discovered some unpleasant changes.

My favorite trainer, an ex-marine who taught boot camp classes, is gone now. They no longer hold classes for less then 3 or 4 people... if there's only two, sorry, you're out of luck! They've also change the hours for the classes that ARE there to 9:00 instead of 8:30.

So, I have to design my own routine now instead of relying on the guidance of a class. Sigh. I don't mind, I have the resources to do it, but it would have been nice to know that beforehand. So, I hit the weights, and did maybe 15 minutes on the treadmill after to round it out. I'm proud of my workout. It was a bit unpolished, but I challenged myself, used the heaviest weights I could tolerate, and I can feel it in my shoulders and hamstrings. I even hit the stair stepper for about 5 minutes.

So, while I'm annoyed that my classes aren't there, this does mean I can go to the smaller gym closer to my house (and by closer, I mean walking distance) because the main reason I went to the bigger one was for the classes.

That is why I like doing it alone. I just haven't been able to successfully depend on others or other's schedules over the years. I do plan to make some appearances at my gym this year since I do pay for it, but it will be more for cross training that fitting in some schedule.

Personally, I prefer doing my own workout. Hopefully, you'll adjust and make "Momma Proud".

Sounds like the universe is telling you it's a good time for a change. emoticon

    Good luck with it! emoticon

Changes can throw things off- but maybe the smaller gym that is walking distance will be better anyway! You can get a warm up/cool down done going to and from- and focus on working out the way you want!

Sometimes having our plans go awry pushes us to do/try something else that works just as well or better. It was great of you to go off on your own instead of giving up. Have you looked on SP for ideas for a workout? If you plan it ahead of time it might help. You could also try making some new friends at the gym and see if you can dig up more interest in the classes.

I love classes, too. I hope the gym closer to your home will add some classes so it's will be win-win.

the HIIT classes that my gym offers don't work with my schedule. The latest starts at 4:30, and I work until 5.

but my 2 spin classes are still on the same schedule - M & W at 5:30

if your gym takes suggestions - the Y marked classes in danger of being canceled on the monthly calendar. If attendance didn't increase by the end of the month, the class was gone. It worked well. You could try to recruit folks to go to the class you really liked. And you had notice that the class may be removed from the schedule.

That's hard when they change things like that. Great job on developing your own workout.

My gym did the same thing. Changed the class schedule. The members are livid. I actually gave several the email of the woman (group ex manager) who changed it rather arbitrarily so they could complain. This woman has no idea what goes on at the gym. She has no idea what the members need or want. She only talks with them when she HAS too. She doesn't believe she has to be at a gym to manager the gym. As a result of her poor management skills when it comes to group ex, we're losing a lot of members.

Personally, I have taught class for 2 people. There's a lot more energy when there are more people. Under performing classes were canceled.

Are they any other classes you could take ? How about some classes on the weekends ? there must be some classes that weren't canceled that would work with your schedule. Or did they cancel that many classes ?

How long were you taking classes ? If you were taking classes long enough, you must remember some of the "routines" they did. If so, start with those routines. If you still need help putting something together, PM me and I'll put together a 30 min strength workout for you.

emoticon It always throws me off when something like that happens, but it looks like you rolled with it. My office has a gym, and the complex fitness room is right across the courtyard from my apartment, and I'm so grateful!
