When it got real - just diagnosed as type 2 diabetic

Saturday, January 12, 2013

My physical was on Monday.
I sort of dreaded it and with good reason. I was up 33 lbs from last year, but even worse was my cholesterol at 250 and having a fasting blood sugar of 156. I am now diabetic.

My first day shopping was not fun...I am waiting 2 weeks to have my follow up "diabetic" visit with a new doctor. So I wondered through Food Lion fingering various packages and reading and finding out that corn syrup and sugar hides in damn near everything. I think by the time I got to the freezer section my eyes were watering with tears and I was feeling so out of control.

I lost my dad at the age of 57 due to a diabetes related heart condition. Diagnosed at 30, he did not try very hard to control it most of the time, and eventually it caught up and took him. I don't want to be my dad. I read they know more now, but it is still a very serious disease.

So I am back, this time watching for carbs AND calories and hoping it is not too late to live some more good life.

Thank you for your support ladies! I am now down 13 lbs!! Cut sugar completely and limiting carbs to 20-30 per meal. I had a week of low carb flu....then amazingly enough, I am feeling good...healthier! I have energy...

I am going to do this :)

    You can turn this around.
You are the author of your story.
    Only YOU determine the ending.
I bet it will be an exciting read from here on out!

You have to lose weight, and your diabetes might be controllable just with diet. Take it seriously, unlike your Dad, and you will live much much longer. You can do this.

Diabetes is not a death sentence and you have a lot of options. Check out the American Diabetes Association website for help.

Sugar and corn syrup aren't what you really need to watch it is carbs. I've been through a lot of nutrition classes with my ex and my current husband and the diabetic Dr you see next will explain that you need to limit your carbs to 4-5 units per meal and 2-3 per snack and that a carb unit is 13-15 grams.

You can do this, no it will not be easy but it will be worth it to manage and control it .

Good luck and big hugs to you.
