A Break From SparkPeople?

Friday, January 11, 2013

I started 2013 with a 5K run on New Year's Day and I've been down for the count since.

On antibiotics day 2 of 2013.

Just when I thought the 7 days of treatment were over...a delayed severe reaction to the antibiotic.

There goes another 10 days of 2013.

Meanwhile, my SparkFriends, and everyone else on SparkPeople, are racking up those fitness minutes and already getting the monthly 250, 500, and even 1,000 monthly fitness minutes awards.

I know I can't say, "Hey! Slow down! Wait for me!"

It wouldn't be fair.

And it completely contradicts the point of the site.

So for my own sanity, I'm giving it some serious thought.

Taking a break from SparkPeople.

If anyone has a better idea please share.

I feel like I'm falling deeper and deeper into a black hole and I'm losing sight of the light.

Let's start a new challenge - taking care of us! I too have been down - since before Christmas. No exercising, and finally this past week spent doing almost nothing. I realize that I pushed too hard in the beginning - and now it is taking a long time to recover. So here's to taking care of oneself. Glad you decided to stay - we are one tough bunch!

I'm just coming across your blog after your post in Sole Sparkers and I'm glad ot say I'm glad you're staying.

We all have ups an downs. I didn't start 2013 strong at all. All that holiday eating and time off didnt' help. I still ran but my schedule was so out of whack. I finally feel like I'm back at it and it's the 13th.

So, glad you're still here. You would have been missed!

Remember this is temporary! You will be back on top of your game before you know it.

We are not competing with each other...we are competing against ourselves. Your fitness minutes versus mine versus someone else's are not important as a whole. Doing the best you can for your journey to better health is whats important.

We are here to encourage and support each other. If you leave, how can we be there for you in either way?

You have to do what YOU feel is best for your situation but I, for one, would miss you!

This Year I don't think I have many if any spark fitness points either.I never win my own challenges on the Team and you think I would be crazy trying to set the ultimate leader example but You know what. I don't really care about winning I just do what I can do.

That's the way I have been since starting about my journey. That this is for me and that's what I pay attention to, if I can encourage and motivate people then that is what I care about. Trust me there are some days where I don't want to do anything on spark. But I do. I don't want to lose the light, The glimmer of hope that keeps me going and on track and personally I know if I leave I'm not coming back because that is my style in things, I start new, excited, then I fail, and fall behind, then I relapse and leave. But not this time. I don't want to start over.

So that's what you have to decide, if this is what you want. Spark has helped you reach your goal and maintenance is scary alone besides being sick on top. I know that it feels like forever since you ran or exercised but think of before you did anything before Spark, did you worry about how much others were exercising? Fitness minutes? I'm guessing, Probably not. So you my friend are still dong great in my book. Be kind to yourself and just worry about you for now my bright sparkle. If you leave we will miss you dearly, but the choice is yours and just know that it will get better sooner then you think.

When I first joined SP, I did everything I could to rack up the most points as fast as possible including trying to do 120 minutes or more per day of exercise. When I joined the Sole Sparkers team, the first month I tried to be 1st in fitness minutes and complete the weekly challenges. I realized 3 things.
    1. I was "competing" against people with fitbits and garmins who would always have more minutes than I would.
    2. I realized I actually wanted to work out smarter and shorter, not spend hours doing it.
    3. The only one I had to track was me so if I don't make a challenge, every good choice I make gets me that much closer to my goals.

Maybe your goals have changed, instead of concentrating on losing weight and exercising, maybe your current goal is just getting over the illnesses your currently fighting. I hope you decided to stay here and stay in touch with us so we can continue to support you.

    Your friend,

Don't feel bad about not being where everyone else is! I haven't racked up any Spark fitness minutes yet either, but it's not the end of everything. There's still other stuff you can do: track your calories, write an entry a day, comment and encourage other people.

Don't give up on the site yet! And please keep in mind that no one is judging you, because we have been there. It just doesn't last forever emoticon
