Just call me Ah-nold

Thursday, January 10, 2013

So last night was THE night. The night where I schlepped back into the gym. I've avoided it for about 2 months now and it's definitely time. It wasn't that I hated it before. I was just lazy. Plus the classes I liked weren't until 6:30, which meant I didn't get home until almost 8 2-3 nights a week. I didn't feel energized at all. In fact, I was exhausted. Then I hurt my ankle and got a pinched nerve in the same week and that just killed it.

But at this point every penny counts, and I cannot let a gym membership go to waste, especially since I'm getting a reduced rate. I did wait to start exercising until a few days after upping my water intake, dropping regular sodas, and trying to eat a little better because I knew I'd be a grumpy sleepy little brat until I got most of it out of my system.

Not only did I go last night, but I did a strength training routine. Those of you who've read here for a while know that I despise strength training. It hurts and it's one of those things I have found works better if someone is pushing me. Suffice to say, strength training, waahhhhhh. But I knew it would be better if I just got it out of the way:

This was my routine, which took about a half hour:

Squats on Leg Press Machine
Sets: 2 Reps: 15 Weight: 140lbs

Abdominal Crunch Machine
Sets: 2 Reps: 15 Weight: 50lbs

Seated Chest Press Machine
Sets: 2 Reps: 12 Weight: 37.5lbs

Seated Overhead Press Machine
Sets: 2 Reps: 12 Weight: 37.5lbs

Seated Row Machine
Sets: 2 Reps: 15 Weight: 37.5lbs

Seated Back Extension Machine
Sets: 2 Reps: 15 Weight: 75lbs

Dumbbell Squat with Calf Raise and Overhead Press
Sets: 2 Reps: 15 Weight: 20lbs

Clamshell Crunch with Ball
Sets: 2 Reps: 10 Weight: 5lbs

As you can see, my arms and lower abs are the serious weak points. I couldn't even do a full 15 reps except on the row machine.

I don't have my free weights class this time since they shuffled up the class schedule, so I'm kind of on my own for ST and really wish I could find a good program. Moreso, I wish I had someone who could motivate me to push harder. For some reason, I can motivate myself with cardio, I guess because I can kind of blank out to ignore the pain, but I can't seem to do that with ST.

I know I need to incorporate some glute workouts in this too. It's still a work in progress, but hopefully I can figure something out soon.

One problem I don't seem to have is insecurity. I was on the machines between the manly men over at the free weights and the super skinny gals on the cardio machines. I was the only woman using the machines, but I toughed it out. I'm not there to impress anyone, even if I did look like an overturned turtle while doing the clamshell crunches. I do wish I had a class to do that kind of stuff in.

So yay, go me. I also managed to pass up the candy at Wal-mart today, though I hadn't had lunch yet and was very hungry. Small victory but victory nonetheless.

Forget waterboarding. THIS is a real torture device.

Awwwwwwwwww I wish I could be there to push you and help you out!! I love love ST way more than cardio. :-P

I think you'll like it more as you get stronger! That's the one thing I miss about not having a gym membership...the ST machines.

Just imagine me standing over you yelling 'ONE MORE!!!! ONE MORE!!!! ONE MORE!!!!' :-P Let me know if it works haha
