I said goodbye to a friend today. No, she didn’t die, but she is retiring from her job here. She worked in another building from me, but had helped me with a job problem; she always seemed to say the right thing just when you needed to hear it, just when you thought you couldn’t take any more.
It doesn’t seem possible that I won’t be seeing those e-mails she was charged with sending out every day, her name in the ‘from’ line always bringing a smile. I won’t cross paths with her when we both, separately, take our walks in the halls on a rainy day, her kind smile always shining like the sun. I won’t see her at meetings or training sessions anymore.
She worked up at headquarters, but always had time for those of us at the very, very bottom of the pecking order. She is a living reminder that every kind word you say can change a life.
