I'm Thinking About a Vegan Experiment

Wednesday, January 09, 2013

So I'm thinking of maybe going vegan for a month. Not because I have any particular moral qualms about eating meat (where I live, the chickens are so free range they follow you down the street). And not because I don't think I can lose weight on a more traditional eating plan, but because I think that being a vegan for a month will make me have to be way more mindful about what I am putting into my mouth.

I think it would be a good exercise in mindfulness to have to actually think about everything I eat, and to have to say "no" to things that I want, because right now it is way to easy to just eat whatever is there without thinking.

I'm waiting until after the weekend, because my birthday is Friday, and there is a BBQ on Saturday for me. I know that there will be ribs, which are a rare treat in this part of the world. So Monday morning is my plan.

I've been to the market--bought soy milk for coffee, chickpeas, lentils, whole wheat pasta and brown rice. I brought almonds, walnuts, quinoa, dried fruit and Kind Bars back from The States with me last week, and I'll go the the veggie stand this weekend.

There is a package of pork chops in my freezer for emergencies, but I think I can do this for a month.

Wonderful reason to try veganism - I have been vegetarian for years and years but haven't done the vegan thing ever consciously as seemed to hard to balance diet and work out what to eat. Your description of this as consciously being mindful is a great way to think of it!

Excellent! Do it do it do it! I'm here if you have any questions or need any help. :) FYI, all the Kind bars I've looked at use honey, which is not vegan.

if you have netflix you might want to view Vegucated.
It is a good documentary about 3 folks that try a vegan diet for 6 weeks.

I've been vegetarian for extended periods, and still have vegetarian days. I do tend to add eggs and dairy, though, since I have some allergies and need to be sure I get my protein in. But I'm sure you can do this, no prob.

Wow! This is a big change. I know several folks who have successfully switched to a vegan diet. If you like the benefits it provides, you can extend the program until it no longer works for you.
