DH and I had fun with that blog.

Saturday, January 05, 2013

We read it together. I did not tell him what I had written till after the fact. When I opened the computer quite late in the morning I was happy the nice comments were there.
Later DH was really hurting, face, hip and upset stomach from so many meds. I suggested he just go back to bed. I put on some music and did just a little cleaning. I noticed my fruit bowls were still very full so I stopped the cleaning to make DH microwave apple crisps. I usually make them twice a week I rarely eat them and so they are his alone. I had apples and pears looking sad in the bowl so I mixed them together to make 2 crisps. I added craisins, he likes them in there and they are very nutritious so in they go. I usually use raisins. It takes me less than 10 minutes to prep fruit for the bottom.

I only use fruit, NO SUGAR OR SWEETENER. A sprinkle of cinnamon adds flavor and a few drops of lemon juice keeps the fruit white. I know cinnamon will make it the same color but believe me seeing the white apples makes it look nicer. The top is just Flour, oats and I tablespoon of brown sugar. I use Canola oil not butter and we love it.
I prefer to grind quick or old fashioned oats to make this recipe instead of AP Flour.
To make the topping crisp up in the microwave I add 2 tablespoon of apple juice unsweetened of course.
By the time DH woke up the Crisps were cooling on the counter and the kitchen smelled of cinnamon and Apple.
I made him some Tea and that was his breakfast.

I had been prescribed an inhaler on Thursday I finally got one today and it really helps when the temperatures are so low. I carry it everywhere with me and I use it when I need to. As soon as I can stop the coughing, wheezing and looking like my face will burst I will try to do some outside walking.

DH and I go to the HIP SURGERY class on Monday and the PA will evaluate the situation it might mean more blood work or not.

We will check on the weather and if there is no storm brewing we will drive to Portland and look at the hotel where we intend to stay before and after the surgery. Our class is after Dark and the interstate goes through the wooded areas. I am hoping if the hotel is nice, reasonable rates we will book a room for one night because I have an appointment in Portland at 8.45 am at the Spine Clinic. That really makes a good plan.

I have to tell anyone who wants that recipe I will copy and paste it in a GOODIE, just ask.
I WILL NOT spend forever using the calculator and ending up with a recipe posted out there. I always manage to let that happen. I do look at recipes here and I am very unhappy with highly negative criticism so I will send it to you rather than be negatively criticized. I hope you all understand that. Thanks, HUG Pat in Maine.

I would love the recipe for the Apple Crisp. It sounds deliciious.

Sounds like a great plan to stay over if the hotel is not too expensive. Sometimes it is just plain easier that doing all the driving to home and back the next day, not to mention the expense of gas.....

I think you will find the inhaler will be so helpful for you. I have found many times that normal cough formulas don't help but taking the inhaler does..... especially in the cold and dank winter months.

I agree about the recipes and comments. I have been on Spark for over 3 years and never figured out how to use the recipe calculator. I agree about all the comments, I only comment when I have a question (such as I don't understand the directions or know what an ingredient is) or a recipe I really like. It it is one I won't use, or didn't like, I won't comment. Just me.

But your Crisp sounds great and I would love the recipe if you wouldn't mind.

Hope you had a great day today and have a safe drive tomorrow.

Pat, you are sounding so much better. I hope you are on the upward mend. Your recipe sounds good but we don't have a microwave. Plus I'm a lazy cook. :( Hubby does most of it now that I am working and he isn't. Unless I get inspired. Hope your DH was able to taste his yummy breakfast. :) HUGS, Terry

I hope the weather doesn't cause any problems and everything moves forward in a timely manner. emoticon (Thank you for the mail. It arrived during the week and was a very nice 'surprise' as I had forgotten about it.)

praying you have great weather though..

Those negative criticisms - I hate them! I also see them on the Taste of Home and allrecipes sites.

I thought of you yesterday when I baked a butternut squash and froze enough for another meal later and two meals for right now.

Hope you are both better soon. This has been along haul, hasn't it? I am finally feeling a bit better, enough to go to a visitation tonight to honor my BF's brother who passed away suddenly on New Year's Day.

I doubt that your recipes would ever get negatively criticized, Pat!

You and Fred are still in my prayers!

I hope dh feels better today. Fruit crisp for somebody who loves fruit sounds like a pretty great remedy to me. I don't mind an orange now and then, but I'm not fruit's biggest fan. All the best with your trip to Portland! Have a restful day in the meantime.

I'd love the recipe! Sounds delicious.

All good thoughts coming your way for a successful visit tomorrow. I think the class may help allay some of the fears of the "unknown" that goes along with any surgery! Good luck.

And glad the inhaler is working for you.

ARE craisins nutritious? Maybe I got the wrong kind. I went to put them in my tracker and there was no nutritional value, just sugar.... but my cranberries in the freezer are find. Hmmm. Have to look at some other packages.

We're getting a dusting of snow this morning --- hope that's all we get this week! I'm sure Fred got a charge out of all of our comments!! Give him a hug from me... hope all goes well this week.

I'd love the recipe too please Pat. I love apples and pears.
Staying over sounds like a good idea as it would work out
the same as driving again the next morning. I hope the class
goes well and that Fred can get the surgery to help him have
the quality of life he deserves. I will give you a recipe from
the Ayurvedic Wellness Centre in Sydney from Dr. Shaun
Matthews and it is a 'cold-busting concoction'. I'm trying
it too as I have a cough and cold too. Hope it helps you.

Combine 1 tablespoon of whole cloves, a few cardamom
seeds, add a stick of cinnamon in a small saucepan with
1and1/2 cups of water. Bring to the boil, and allow to
simmer for 5 to 10 minutes.
"Drink small amounts throughout the day, with a little bit
of sugar or sweetener to taste," says Dr. Matthews.

Here is what he says about cloves. "Clove is very warming
and helps reduce mucus." Cloves are known for their soothing,
    congestion-relieving anti-inflammatory properties and can
also be used in a burner as the oils will be breathed in and
these can carry out their immune-strengthening as well as
anti-microbial duties from the lungs as suggested by
    acupuncturist Jennifer Jones.

I hope this helps you Pat. Thinking of you and Fred. Have a
safe trip to Portland. emoticon emoticon

Pat, I would love to have your recipe. I have everything to make it and it sure sounds good! I love anything apple.

Your plan to spend the night is a great one. Think of time and gas having to turn around and go back the next morning. It will probably even itself out.

Keeping my fingers, eyes and toes crossed that everything works out for Fred's surgery.

I would love the recipe Pat, since I am diabetic, it would be awesome and because of my high potassium problem, this is also AOK for me. I am praying that your class goes well. I will be praying for DH's surgery to go well, just please keep us informed.

Pat, I am so happy you have good medicine to make you feel better. Sometimes we don't know how bad we feel till we get a bit of help (medicine) that gives relief right away.

Hope the Hotel will be reasonable priced and comfortable.

Have a restful weekend. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
