Weight gain or cold scale?

Thursday, January 03, 2013

I had a funny experience with my weigh-in this morning. I live just a bit north of Boston, and for the past few days it has been very cold. Yesterday I stepped on my (digital) scale and was thrilled to see that I had mostly maintained my weight over the holidays. This morning I stepped on and the scale registered a 7 pound increase!

Knowing that it's nearly impossible to gain 7 pounds in one day, I'm guessing that:

a. The frigid temperature has the scale out-of-wack. We keep it in our closet which has a hardwood floor but is unheated, and it's near an outside wall.
b. Some of the holiday overeating has caught up with me.
c. A little bit of both A and B.

What do you think? Ever seen a wild fluctuation with your scale?

It was 9 degrees south of Boston this morning, so I imagine it was colder up in your direction! I keep my scale in a closet as well and depending on where I place it on the floor, my weight has varied up to 8 lbs at a time (and my floors don't appear to be crooked). I usually weigh myself in three places in my bathroom to figure out which number is most accurate. So annoying!

I actually think it's rather amusing, which is a serious attitude adjustment on my part.
I did a reality check with the mechanical balance scale that's in the locker room at work, which registered exactly halfway between yesterday's and today's weigh-ins at home. Allowing for additional weight from clothing, food and drink (I'm weighing later in the day at work), that reading is more in sync with yesterday's weigh-in than this morning's.

Don't forget water weight gain. I can flucuate up to 8 pounds from day to day depending on water weight gain. That is one of the reasons I don't weigh every day. It depresses me to see the number go up.
