Getting healthier day by day

Tuesday, January 01, 2013

I lost another 2 lbs. The weight loss is going slower, which is alright with me. I had my follow-up appointment yesterday with the surgeon who took out my gallbladder, and so far I'm doing very well with recovery and getting back to normal.
The bad news: apparently I also had a bit of hepatitis along with the other stuff that happened while I was in hospital. Not only do I have to maintain a low-fat, non-dairy diet, I also have to figure out a way to cut down on carbs - breads, crackers, other processed-grain foods. Too much of those create an environment where my liver retains fat.
The good news: fatty liver disease is reversible! If I can make the necessary changes, and keep some kind of handle on my OCD, then my liver will get back to normal as well.
Obviously I have not been kind to my body over the years.
I resolve for this brand new and sparkling new year to start being kind to my body. I resolve to treat my body as if it deserves the best I can feed it. I resolve to get back to my whole-food roots, and re-learn to cook with less fat and more flavor, fiber, and nutrients.
In two weeks I will probably get my full appetite back, and I have to be prepared for that. To prepare, I will have plenty of delicious soups in the freezer, plenty of marinara (less pasta, more sauce!) for when I just need some simple "comfort food" carbs. Pink Lady apples are in season, so I keep a supply of those on hand as well. It is true: "An apple a day keeps the doctor away". I was there once, and need to get back to it.
