New Year, not going to make a promise I won't keep

Tuesday, January 01, 2013

I have decided not to make a normal resolution. I am not going to make another promise to lose weight, or be a nicer person, or to save more money. Not that I don't need to do these things, or that I am not going to try, its just I want to resolve to do something different.
This year I am planning on doing two random acts of kindness a month. It doesn't have to be huge things, but I would like to make sure I am looking out for other people who have a larger need than me. Wouldn't it be nice if everyone we knew did just one kind thing for a stranger a month? Think of all the happy surprises each month.
Paying for the car behind me at a fast food drive up, raking my neighbors yard while they are out, buying a sackful of extra can goods when I do my shopping. There are so many things that I can do, not so I can pat myself on the back, but so I can make someone else smile. If I do it right the people I do things for won't even know who helped them.
This is a promise I can keep, one that will make someone elses day a little better, but will make my year a lot better.

    This is a great idea.

I work at value Village, and we do this stamp-passes thing. Fill up the pass, get 30% off. Well, we run them quarterly, and on the last couple days, we have a number of regulars who have extra cards filled out, and they leave them with the cashiers, to "give to the next customer with kids" or something. I love being a part of that, and it's wonderful to see a family suddenly realize that the huge pile of kids clothes they are buying will be only $70 instead of $100...things like that.

I can tell you, those random acts will definitely make people feel great - awesome pledge!
