I ran today. This was my first run outside in really cold weather (it's about -15 degrees celcius outside). It's also my first run in about 6 weeks. Didn't realize it had been that long. The first 10 minutes were really, really unpleasant. My fingertips were freezing and my forehead was aching. I thought I wouldn't be able to get through it. But then I warmed up and it was fine. The roads weren't slippery, even when I was running on my own street, which doesn't get cleared very well. The biggest problem I had was the need to keep pulling up my pants and pulling down my base layer shirt. Because of my unusual body shape (hips are several inches smaller than my waist), pants are always a problem for me. Just can't get them to fit right. It wasn't the end of the world, it was just kind of uncomfortable at times. In any case, I ran about 5K, and given the weather conditions and the fact that it's been a while since I've run, I was pretty happy with my overall pace. Running 5K only gets me up to about 6800 steps (I had done about 1000 steps before running). From there it should be easy to reach 10000 for today. It just goes to show how hard it is in general to reach 10000 though -- I don't plan on running every day.
So, that's a good start to the new year I think. I was hoping to get out to see my friend participate in the Great Canadian Chill (running into the Ottawa River today, to raise money for children's cancer research), but it doesn't look like I'll have time, as I have to stretch, shower and make the 2 hour drive to my parents place for New Year's dinner and to bring my kids home.
