Honored on Christmas to play piano for famous singer...

Sunday, December 30, 2012

So there I was playing the piano at Ebenezer Nursing Home in Minneapolis for the dinnertime in the evening when this very nice man came up and asked if I could play The Christmas Song (Chestnuts roasting on an open fire...) as he like the way I played it. He mentioned he was in a biographical play (which he didn't tell me that he wrote and had the lead in) about Nat King Cole. When he sang he sounded just like Nat King Cole, and so I figured he must be playing the lead. He only sang one song but when he left (he was visiting a resident there) he stopped by the piano and said, "Keep playing the piano," and perhaps somthing else which I didn't hear as I was in the middle of another Christmas song.

So the next day, I Googled the play he was in. It has been very popular and he even did a bit of it at the Kennedy Center for the Arts in 2010. It was Dennis Spears (the male voice in Moore by Four) and he has a very active singing and acting career.

I was glad he didn't tell me who he was before I accompanied him or I probably would have gotten nervous! What a wonderful experience! And a Happy New Year (I will be playing on New Year's Day at the same venue!)

P.S. At least he is famous in Minnesota....

That's a great story I am glad that it happened to you. I know what a challenge it is playing at a hospital or nursing home --I always end up crying in my car on the way home.
And the home being named "Ebenezer " (as in scrooge) has a nice bit of Irony to melt the heart.

I am glad you had such a special time !!
wish you many more times like that in the new year.

Wow what a compliment he gave you, a special treat to the residents for that song he sang. How is Laura doing?

    How thrilling! What a blessing!

i was reading your page, and I can so identify with your struggles!

I've managed to lose weight, then it crept back up especially after I had an injury and couldn't exercise for a while. Then my exercise bike (used) broke down, and it took a while before I could replace it. But I'm back o track - and now deal with arthirits in the hip and knees. I'm looking at probably hip repair come summer vacation, so I can have time to recupe and not lose work - but Am concerned about the weight creeping back up. So, all the more reason, I have to be careful, to exercise (especially the muscles for hips and knees).
But Spark is a GREAT resource! I am confident I can do this. And that YOU can TOO! Onward and Upward! Blessings on your journey to a healthy lifestyle!

    Wow - how cool!
I no longer live in the cities buy was born and raised there and lived in various communities until 2 years ago - I love it when I read about MN.
MOORE BY FOUR was always a great group to see whenever they were performing.
