Post-Surgery Update

Friday, December 21, 2012

emoticon It's been a week since my hysterectomy, and recovery is going slowly. I don't know why I imagined that it would be any other way; there is bound to be a fair amount of "down" time. The good thing is, they were able to leave my ovaries so I don't have to be on hormones. Also, the pathology report was clear, aside from some cancer, woohoo! That's huge!

There are 4 incisions on my tummy, two on the right side, one on the left, and one about an inch above my belly button. They are all less than 1 inch but they still hurt. Generally, the pain is tolerable, although it does come and go. I was given 25 painkillers, which lasted me just a few days, taking one every 4 hours. My dr. won't refill (for a number of reasons, including constipation and the false sense of wellness they can give), so the past few days I've been doing Aleve and trying to just relax more. That is hard to do, when I'm bored and feeling guilty all the time about the chores piling up.

I have intermittent headaches and nausea. My appetite hasn't been very good, but I'm trying to eat well and include a lot of fiber-rich foods. I'm definitely swollen in the abdomen area. I'm fairly mobile and able to walk around the house. I can't stand for long periods, however, so going anywhere such as grocery shopping is not an option. I also can't drive for 2 weeks.

I'm really glad that the surg. is done and I'm doing as well as I am. I just should have been more realistic in terms of the healing time--that is the hard thing for me right now. There are so many things I could be doing, but am restricted from. DH has been good to me, although I don't think he has a concept of the pain and side effects.

I hope every one of my Spark pals is having a wonderful holiday season and enjoying every minute of it. Miss you guys so much!!

Glad the Surgery went well with good path results. That stinks that your Dr won't refill or give you a milder pill that is stronger than aleve. One thing that helped after my lap when the pain pills weren't cutting it was alternating with heat and ice on a towel over my abdomen. Hang in there and hopefully at the two week mark you will be remarkedly better.
