Mindful Eating... Another Way of Thinking

Monday, December 17, 2012

When I am eating something, I like to try to think about ALL that is involved in what I have in front of me. Take a simple breakfast of a blueberry muffin.
First and foremost, it is easy for me to thank God for all that He has provided for that item: blueberries, wheat for flour, chickens for eggs, vegetables for oil, cows for milk.
Then I go to the people who have been involved in the process of getting this gift from God to me at my table. Someone, probably a farmer, planted the blueberry bush and took care of watering and other gardening chores. He, or perhaps someone he hired, harvested the berries. (Or perhaps someone harvested wild blueberries cultivated somewhere.) The same idea goes on to the poultry farmer, the wheat farmer, vegetable farmer, dairyman, etc.
Now that the berries, eggs, wheat, etc. are available, several other someones are needed to transport the goods to the places that can turn them into a muffin. Bakeries, grocery stores (if you and I are going to make the muffins from scratch), or large corporations like HOSTESS??... or something like that... who will turn out thousands of muffins for the general public. Then, thanks to all the people who have previously invented and manufactured the various items necessary for measuring, mixing, baking at regulated temperatures, and for allowing the pans someone designed for the perfect size and shape (now hot from the oven) to be safely removed, the muffin is ready for packaging. (Thanks to the ones responsible for that.) Then the store clerk, bakery sales staff, Mom, or you and I get to set them out for eating.
Kinda makes it a little harder to just scarf the muffin down on the way somewhere or while concentrating on the morning paper or TV, doesn't it?
Now before you reach for the butter...
