Scripture: Colossians 2:20-23 (NLT)
You have died with Christ, and he has set you free from the spiritual powers of this world. So why do you keep on following the rules of the world, such as, 21 “Don’t handle! Don’t taste! Don’t touch!”? 22 Such rules are mere human teachings about things that deteriorate as we use them. 23 These rules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, pious self-denial, and severe bodily discipline. But they provide no help in conquering a person’s evil desires.
Observations: In reading this passage, I was struck with the contrast between the “old man,” us with our sin nature, and the “new man,” us as born-again believers with the Spirit of God living in us. Verse 22 comments on the human teachings—rules—our old man strives to follow in our lives and even in the church, and then vs. 23, at the very end, declares “But [these rules] provide no help in conquering a person’s evil desire.”
Application: The only hope I have in overcoming the desire of my flesh is not all the rules that dead religion has taught me; the Hope I have is the Spirit of God who lives in me, the Spirit who “made all things new,” who daily teaches me the reality of the redemption I have through Jesus Christ. I am indeed a “new man,” a totally different person that I was before Christ came into my life. I no longer have a sin nature, I am a NEW creation and have a “righteousness” nature! I am a new species, one that has never existed before, and can really understand now what scripture mean when Jesus says, “Behold, I make all things new”!!
Prayer: Father, thank you for Jesus and for His blood that cleanses me and makes me NEW! Thank you for Holy Spirit who teaches me daily through Your Word and through Your gifts of the pastors, teachers and prophets. Thank You Father that You provide a way of escape when I am tempted to step over my new nature and do things that my old nature would do. You remind me that’s not who I am any more. I am Your child, a child of the light, with a righteousness nature and not a sin nature. Thank you, Lord. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
