Portion Distortion

Thursday, December 06, 2012

I'm writing this because I suspect many of you will relate to it.

Last night I made pasta for dinner with a tomato and hamburg spaghetti sauce. I dutifully used my 9 inch plates like I always do. I didn't measure my portions though. I just eyeballed it. After a few bites I realized I didn't really feel like eating. Maybe it was the snack I had when I got home that killed my appetite, or maybe it was just because I've been feeling blah lately. Whatever the reason, I went to the cupboard and got a bowl for my leftovers. I was shocked to see how much was leftover! I had given myself a portion far bigger than I realized. No wonder I "wasn't hungry". The portion that had been on my plate had been HUGE and I hadn't even realized it. It was a flat plate and didn't look "that high" but when I saw it in the bowl I realized. Yowza!

I need to do a better job. Instead of eyeballing it, I need to really measure. Last night was an eye-opener for sure!

Yeah, pasta is hard to "eyeball" for me too. Great job in stopping when you were full rather than forcing it all down.

Some things are harder to eyeball than others. Pasta is definitely one of those. Go with the whole wheat pasta - you don't get more in a portion but it stays with you longer. emoticon

I do not measure either, eyeballing can get us into trouble but I have faith that you will do better the next time. I have been feeling blah also....hope you blahness leaves soon.

Portion size is a KILLER! My eyes always say "It's not that big" and the measuring cup says "Are you KIDDING me?!?". Sometimes I need to re-train my eyes by measuring for awhile!

Pasta is so hard. I've started using our salad/dessert plates whenever I'm having pasta for dinner!

i can eyeball pretty accurately but pasta I always measure because it's so difficult to "see". At least you stopped eating when you felt full. Listening to your body is just as important as accurate portion sizes :)
