Outdoor Decorations

Did people in your neighborhood decorate with lights? Did some people really go “all out” when decorating? Any stories involving your ancestors and decorations?

This is the Advent Christmas Memories Blog for today.

December 5, 2012

1. Growing up several people in our neighborhood decorated outside. There was one area where the homeowners really were fancy with their outside lights. My family only put electric candles in the windows.

2. When I moved to FL I was shocked at how many did outside lights. What i had thought was all out when I lived in Ohio, was nothing like here. Several homes have people going through their homes and touring the outside. There is also one that has a huge santa in his sled with the reindeer on their roof!! People from miles around come to see that one. All of our neighbors have outdoor lights and since Bob and I got married, he puts some up outside.

3. I don't have any stores of my ancestors and outdoor lights. Most of them lived on large farms and most likely didn't feel the need as no one would see them.

Each year Bob usually takes either pictures or videos of our outdoor lights. He does a really great job. I used to put up our tree in the FL room which could be seen from outside. I also used to have a huge ball made from clear plastic cups with miniature lights inside that I would hang on the front porch but never considered it an outside decoration. Bob tries to add one new decoration and/or a string of lights each year. it is really pretty this year. I think it is just enough - not too little, yet not too much either.

Do any of you decorate outside?

Enjoy the rest of your week. Don't forget to reward yourself, if even a new pen, magazine, nail polish, or anything small. Even with holiday presents coming soon, you deserve something for reaching a goal no matter what size it is!!

Peace Love Joy to all my Spark Buds. i love each of you.

I candles in the windows sounds like the Irish tradition that my Mother passed on to us. Some of my Mothers family has been in the US since before the Revolution and one was a solider in that war.

No decorations to speak of for us over the years. Nothing either for my parents.

We did drive around when we were kids with my parents to see houses that were decorated. The newspapers here print the addresses of houses with lights worth seeing.

None of this happened when we were growing up...but now it is more common in my local area. Some of the displays are truly beautiful!

Growing up we just decorated in the house, but the tree was always a family affair. I do not decorate any more with it just being me, but I do enjoy the fruits of other people's labor with their decorating. Lots of decorating in my area, the always call me the Scrooge because I don't. I saw a house the other evening that was totally covered with lights. Would not want to pay their electric bill.

Glad you and Bob are feeling well enough to do your decorations. Enjoy! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

We don't decorate outside. See more houses this year lit up. Seems that the amount of decorations depends on the weather and the emotional climate of the state. When we were initially slammed with job loss it was a dark Christmas. Think that Floridians may have a ton because the weather is far mor cooperative and they have time to get it all out:)
Growing up we put a wreath out and lights. I still love those old lights. The big fat bulbs:) Oh and we also had some of those old-style, raised plastic decorations that we would put up. My favorite was the creepy looking Santa:) lol

Many years ago when I first met my husband, he brought me here to his parents house to see the automated life-size Santa he had constructed and painted. Santa still waves from the side porch 50 years later! It's funny that back then he painted a "self-portrait" for Santa's face--and now he really is Santa!

Outdoor decoration has never been such a huge thing here in the UK as it is in the states and I've never done it, nor my neighbours.
    But it is catching on!

When I was younger I lived in the country, and we didn't decorate outside, but we sure did decorate inside. I live in an apartment now, and a lot of the people here have lights on their balconies. Have a wonderful time as you wait for Christmas.

growing up, we did not decorate outside, it was cold we did have a wreath on the door and a decorated tree at a window, we did always take down the tree New Years Day, bad luck to take it down earlier, and then we would burn the tree, every year, now New Years Day burning a Christmas tree outside in Iowa was kind of weird but we did it every year, not sure what tradition that was from
    but good memories

Yes, we live in a little town of 311. A lot of people decorate. We moved into a new house last year but are decorating for the first time this year. And we keep decorating and decorating and decorating.

The town square is like mega decorated - the student council does it -and I will post picture later.

And yes, Mom and Dad always decorated.

Have a great season! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
