Eating 6 Small Meals - Does it work?

Thursday, November 29, 2012

Becuase of my personal training assessment one of the big changes I have made is eating six small meals a day, around 300-400 calories each. My problem was not eating enough during the day and pigging out in front of the TV at night. Not only was this diet high calories and fat.. I was tired, irritable and well an overal pain in the ass during the day.

A typical day used to go...
Breafast 9:00am - Coffee
Lunch 2:00pm - Subway
Dinner 6:00pm - Everything in the fridge and a strong drink

Now it's more like....
Meal 1 5:00am - Bread, peanut butter, yogurt and strawberries
Meal 2 9:00am - Cottage Cheese and an apple
Meal 3 12:00 pm - Hummus flatbread with alpalpha sprouts, low fat string cheese, hot tea
Meal 4 3:00pm - Kashi oatmeal with honey, yogurt
Meal 5 7:00pm - 3oz salmon, cous cous, asparagus
Meal 6 (optional) - Piece of fruit

I've been eating this way for about three weeks now (minus Thanksgiving of course). I noticed a huge difference even the first day. I didn't feel like I had to pick myself up off the floor at work... and I could deal with stressful situation better which is an hourly event in a medical office.

I began to research this through Google of course and there are a lot of negative posts about this idea. There are a lot of postive posts too, don't get me wrong, but many think it's a sham and there isn't acutally a difference. For me there was, a HUGE difference. Eating small meals throughout the day keeps me in my calorie, fat, carb and protein range. I feel better and can keep going all day, including strength training in the morning and an hour of cardio at night. I guess the point is listen to your body, if one way isn't working try this. And just becuase it works for one person it might not for the next. For me this works gloriously and I know this is something I can do for the rest of my life.

I'm definitely with you on the small meals thing. Plus even without splitting it into smaller meals, you're eating so much better food. It is amazing to me on the days that I kind of cheat on my nutrition, how hard it is for me to get enough protein and such. I just don't feel as good. I am so much happier when I have a little bit of food at a time. Sometimes my schedule makes that difficult, but I've started carrying a little bag of almonds in my purse for those times that I really don't have time for a full snack but I just need a little protein boost. It was one of the better ideas I've had. Keep up the good work!

You are totally right - it's all about what works for YOU! I had to post because I feel like you're my opposite-eating twin! emoticon Hehe! I tried the six small meals and couldn't make it work, but when I discovered intermittent fasting (eating 2 larger meals a day) the pounds started melting off. emoticon It's amazing how every body has different needs!

Other people are good for comparing notes with, but if you listen to your body it will NEVER lie to you. emoticon
