How do you find a balance between your mental and physical motivation?

Hi everyone!
It's been a while, I know. Here's a brief recap of my last 7 months: Foot surgery, immobility, blood clots in leg and lungs, more immobility, gain of 30lbs, feeling disgusting.

That about wraps it up! Basically, I had surgery, almost died and now I'm struggling with getting back on the horse. And, I need your help.

Right now, I'm struggling with an mismatch between my mental and physical motivation. I'm extremely mentally motivated to get my ass off the couch and get moving. My physical motivation is almost non-existent. Because of the 30+lbs gain, it's harder to move. Just walking makes my back hurt and my motivation wane even more.

I need to get "back in shape" (I use the quotes because I've never been "in shape" but I've been in much better shape than I am right now) for several reasons: #1 To be healthy (obvs) #2 Softball season is coming up and right now I can't run the bases #3 My best friend is getting married in May and I will be *mortified* if I'm "the fat bridesmaid."

So, my question to you is - how do you deal with it when you're so amped and mentally ready to get in better shape, but you're tired and achy after work? I'm mentally on the treadmill but physically on the couch.

    I start by eating more of the right things. Whether you get out there and buy a book about dieting, reading the pages here or whatever. The thing is, you start feeling better by putting good things that your body needs in your mouth.

    I know in a way, this sounds nutty, but it works for me. I have a fatty liver. I had to lose the weight, but didn't have the gumption to get up and move. So, I found a book in the store and bought it about fatty liver. I lost 20 pounds and feel better. Although, I have had major setbacks too. I haven't put the weight back on.

    As you feel better, you don't realize that you're doing more.

    At least, I did.

    I use 5 incremental minutes. I do the treadmill for 5 minutes. Then, 5 more. Once I am on it or any other machine, I start and do the whole workout. Once started, it is much easier to stick to it. But, knowing I only have to do 5 minutes helps me get started in the first place. You are not alone with this state!

    I've been where you are. I had surgery on both my feet over the last two years. I was immobile for months at a time, lost all of my muscle tone in my legs, and gained 20 pounds both times. It was so discouraging! I know it is hard to be patient with your body's limitations when your mind is ready to go full speed ahead. I was disgusted with how I felt, and when I did start working out again I was depressed with how low my fitness level had gotten.

    You just have to start. Start slow, and keep going. Consistency is the key. Just do something, it will get you moving forward. Even if it is small, it is more than what you are currently doing. Each time you do something active, you will feel a little better. It does take time, but you will regain your fitness faster than you think. Now I have lost most of the weight. I am within 6 lbs of where I was before my first surgery, and able to be so much more active on my improved feet!
