Ah baking - I love you!

Monday, November 12, 2012

Back before I was a mom and had such an over-full schedule, I used to love to bake. Or I guess, since I still do love to bake, I should say I used to bake regularly.
I made cakes and cookies and pies. I always baked a bunch of stuff at Christmas. What I love about baking is that all you have to do is follow the recipe - there's no guess work, really. And at the end you come up with something yummy (and yes, I LOOOOOOOVE my sweets!) Everybody loves dessert.
Back before I was a mom (let's call it PM for pre-motherhood), like many of us, I didn't have to battle my weight. So all that baking wasn't a problem. Well... that has certainly changed. So I added the fact that I didn't want baked goods around to the list of why I just never do it. (okay - very rarely!)
So tonight I actually had time, and I decided to bake.
It was a pecan pie (it's in the oven as I type), and this was my first attempt at a pecan pie. (It's kinda funny because I got the recipe from the karo syrup bottle... my friend who always brings the pecan pie to parties told me her "secret recipe" was actually the one from the karo bottle!) And I also had found a recipe for a super simple whole wheat pie crust that I had really been wanting to try. (Plus, I want to take a pecan pie to Thanksgiving with the family, so I needed to try it out first - I never like to take my first attempt at a dish to a party.
After I had it in the oven I was so HAPPY! I mean, really, really happy!
I had forgotten how relaxing and enjoyable it is - even in my cramped kitchen where I have to unpack the entire cupboard just to get out the darn pie dish and mixing bowl!
The smell of a baking pie is so comforting to me. And it is such a satisfying feeling to have accomplished my task. It's kind of amazing how many aspects of this I like! It's no wonder I love to bake so much!!
The issue with all the calories that are soon to be available to me and my family via that pie (if it's any good!) will have to be dealt with somehow, but I'll cross the bridge when I come to it!
Fow now, I am just a happy baker!!!!!
Thanks for reading.

And I'd love to hear about your take on baking and how it does or doesn't fit in now that you are watching what you eat. emoticon

I love baking as well; It is so relaxing and enjoyable; My sister told me it is too much work! guess only a baker knows the art of cutting those cherries into smaller pieces, brush egg wash onto cookies, etc. It is good therapy for me. Funny thing is I am not a fan of sweets. My husband on the other hands loves it. Over the last 25 years I spoiled this man. I bake every other day - between emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon the man runs everyday trying to keep his weight down. This Thanksgiving I will be doing lots of baking as my kids are coming home and got to have everyone favorite.
Hope your pecan pie turns out emoticon Happy baking and enjoy this one of the kind hobby! emoticon

I do like cooking and baking. Just really hate the cleanup! LOL!

Fortunately the guys at work usually are receptive to whatever I bring in! I've gotten hooked on Pinterest and that has led to lots of new recipes - and most of them are not healthy friendly! LOL! The best one that I've found there is a peanut butter cup banana bread. Yummy!

I will be making an apple pie next week for Thanksgiving as my husband had requested one. I do cheat and use a ready made crust (its been years since I made a crust from scratch).

I am trying to make sure that when I cook and bake, I do more from scratch (well except for the pie crust!) so that I can better understand what's in there. At least that's what I'm telling myself!

I love to bake too but with time being so limited I don't do it as often as I should. However, I do make brownies at least three times a month for my son to take to work. I'm the only one who likes pecan pie - and yes, I use the Karo syrup recipe too but add extra pecans. . . gotta have my nuts!

I love this blog probably because I love baking too. I also can see how happy it makes you. I still bake quite a bit especially around the holidays even with losing weight but I do a lot more gifting these days than eating the fruits of my labor. That way I can still enjoy baking without the guilt. This Thanksgiving I am attempting my first ever Apple Pie for my grandson who has requested one. In all my years of baking I have never made one and I have no idea why. Nevertheless this will be the year. Happy baking my friend. Hope the pecan pie turns out emoticon
