Winterizing My Routine

As the weather begins to change, I really need to focus on changing my work out habits as well. It wasn't until my recent trip to Puerto Rico that I realized just how much I have come to ... enjoy
running outside. On vacation, we used the resort gym and I ran on a treadmill. Before this summer, all I ever did was run on a treadmill. I thought running outside was harder and just not my thing. I was so wrong! One of the main benefits of running outside is that when you get half way through your workout and realize you're bored, you still have to finish your workout to get home! I also took my dog out running with me and enjoyed that time with her.
Now, the days are shorter and the evenings are cooler. It gets dark within an hour and half of me getting home. I suppose for a couple more weeks, I could still take the dog out running if I made it my very first action after getting home, but if I take even a few minutes to relax, I've lost that window. And some days are too cold no matter what time I get home. Tonight really made that hit home for me because instead of my usual 30 minute run (approx. 5K), I went out for a 10K run to see my improvement during the challenge. I haven't run as much lately due to the weather and I think it really showed in my performance. I was able to shave about 1min12sec off of my time, but I had been hoping for even more than that. I have no idea what the other challenge participants have done.
About 40 minutes into my run it started to get pretty dark. Luckily it was a warm day and I was on my way home by then, but I certainly would not have wanted to be on the trail in the dark (there are no lights and lots of places for people to hide, I'm totally paranoid). So now I have to think of other ways to get in my exercise. I'm going to have to make a habit of going to the gym again. I think it will be good for my body to get in other forms of working out (stairmaster, bike, elliptical) and I might be able to talk myself into some more strength training since I will already be at the gym. It's mostly about convincing my brain to get there! Luckily, I have a Nook and I can read on any cardio machine (including the treadmill!) so that helps combat boredom. I'm going to have to take the dog on separate walks though, that will be hard for me psychologically, I loved being able to multi-task.
I'm also going to try working out at home a little more if I can't force myself to the gym. This way, I can break a few days into three ten minute segments instead of 30 straight minutes. I have a decent amount of equipment (jump rope, some weights, bands, a mat). When I go to the thrift store this weekend (for smaller pants f-yeah!) I'm going to see if they have any work out DVDs. I am also going to try to borrow some that are tried and true from KOKITTY and start looking up some good SP videos and YouTube stuff. There's a pilates class at the gym on Tuesdays that I think I can make, so that would make three classes (which tend to be great work outs for me). I'll keep trying things until I find what I like. I will not let winter mean extra pounds! I have worked hard for my success and I want it to continue!!
