Whew! I did it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This morning I checked the weather forecast and saw that things were going to take a turn for the worse tomorrow morning so I decided to head out for my virtual 5K Trick or Treat Trot today.
I bundled my little guy into his snowsuit and strapped him into the jogging stroller. I headed for my favourite running path and it was gorgeous. The sun was shining and snow was melting all around me. I was a bit worried that my son might be overdressed but I reminded myself that he wasn't moving like me and was likely a lot colder than I was feeling. I began to run. It took me a while to get into my stride but by the 10 minute point I was into a good rhythm.
Just as I approached the halfway point, a gust of wind nearly blew me off my feet! All of a sudden, the sky went dark and cloudy and snow flakes began to fall. The puddles of melted snow began to freeze! I couldn't believe how quickly the weather had turned and I was thankful that (my now sleeping) toddler was wrapped up in so many warm layers!
I reached the halfway point and turned around. I was running against the wind for most of the second half, but when I realized that I was in the last kilometer I stopped caring about the wind and just enjoyed the fact that I was going to reach my goal! I thought of those two jack @ss gym teachers who rolled their eyes at me and made snide comments for not being able to keep up when I was in elementary and junior high school. I wanted to scream out loud "F-you Mr.M and Mr.F!!!" Instead I shifted my thoughts to my fellow Sparkers. I though of my fellow C25Kers and everyone else who is doing a virtual Trick or Treat Trot this week.
My time was on the slow side, but I didn't set out to break any speed records. What I set out to do, back in February, was to run 5K for the first time at age 40. Well, I did it!!! I feel confident that I could do it again too! I'm not sure where I'll go from here, but I will definitely keep running. First I'll work on my time and then decide if I want to tackle a longer distance.
For now, I'm celebrating. This is a HUGE fitness victory for me!
