Flu Two! Booo!!

Saturday, October 27, 2012

There was a (very nice, elderly) gentleman honking and snortling at the gym on Wednesday. No inhibitions at all, filling the air around his step machine while he clutched the handles with both hands. Leaving no hand free to wield a tissue.

I admire him for trying to stay fit. But please, please, please: stay home when germy!

Some of us (that would be me) are ridiculously susceptible. Even with hand washing and sanitizing and . . . did all of that.

I tried to avoid him, yes I did. But my heart sank. I wished he had stayed home.

And: by yesterday noon I was honking and snortling myself. So much for my scheduled "mental health" day. In the morning, I managed to get all of last winter's supermarket hyacinth bulbs planted in my garden. I also purchased 60 snowdrop bulbs and a few purple and white stripy crocuses and some tiny yellow daffodils: the very early blossom is so heartening and I appreciate it the most. But: didn't manage to get any of those planted before the onset of fever, aches, chills and sneezing. Plus snortling. Yuck.

I will stay home from the gym today. Expect to be feeling well enough to return to work on Monday.

And I have booked the first available flu shot (which sadly is not until November 21).

Sure, I will try not to growl or glower at the nice gentleman when I see him next. But: it might be difficult!!

So very sorry you caught this bug :((( I SOOO hate people who come to the club sick and there are lots. One woman actually came with pnuemonia !!! (She. Didn't. Think. It. Was. Contagious) You can hear the big honking nose blows, the sneezes, etc. Some actually cover with their arm, but most just have a tiny little dainty kleenex, balls of which line the club foor on a regular basis. I am very fortunate I am not easily susceptible to them. Mom had the worst cold when she was looking after me with my hip replacement, but I never caught it. Maybe the curse of RA means my immune system is strong enough to fight off infections -33 surgeries and not one infection.
Good for you getting some bulbs planted in spite of being sick -it sounds like you will have an awesome collection of spring flowers coming up!!
    Feel better soon!!

It rots when folks are inconsiderate like that. Are there rules at the gym? Can Management help?
If that fails perhaps you could find a back up plan to limit your exposure and stay healthy.

Why oh WHY do people think they are being "brave" continue their "normal" activities while exposing the rest of us to their creeping crud?

Hope you feel better soon! emoticon

Oh, Ellen. So sorry you got it. I know you are fit enought to fight it off quickly, but what a bummer to mess with your good plans for mental health day. Hope you can arrange at least 2 great days to make up for what you missed. I, myself, am caring for sick family members and trying very hard not to succumb. Wishing you well! Take care, Marsha

Too bad gyms (or workplaces) can't be like schools. "Your kid is sick, come get him outta here!" I'm amazed at how many people won't get a flu shot because "they never get the flu." Then they honk and cough on everyone saying it's just a cold while spreading their flu germs to the world. Yeah, this is a sore point with me.

I hope you feel better soon.

Yes, I wish germy people would stay home too. Hope you are feeling better too. I've never done many fall bulbs but I should because I'm jealous of those that do every spring.

It's hard to decide which is better, staying fit or staying home to prevent others from getting sick. Some people honestly don't realize how much they are endangering others when they go out when they are ill. And some don't realize how ill (and contagious!) they are. You could ask your gym if they would consider posting a sign for flu season advising patrons that working out while ill could cause others to get ill as well? I hope you feel better soon! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Sorry you had to encounter the germy gent at your gym... to be ridiculously alliterative. Hope you feel better soon, and thanks for YOUR consideration in not showing up when wheezing, yourself. emoticon

On a separate note, my mom loved the hyacinths, and they always make me think of her. She always seemed to have them and crocus to greet us in the Spring. emoticon
