Craving of Carbs?

Tuesday, October 23, 2012

Does a bad day at the office or a argument with your spouse send you marching to the cookie jar or the corner bakery?

Or do you find yourself at the vending machine every day precisely at 4 pm for some sweets or chocolate?

"You don't want to kill for a piece of broccoli, but you'd kill for a piece of bread. It's a clear signal that your body needs more carbs. It’s not an abnormal craving.”

I find that I crave carbs when I am depressed carb craves who have a mildly depressed, moody or pre pms.

In a magazine I found an article that said * Eating carbohydrates seems to help eating carbohydrates made you feel better in about 20 minutes, according to magazine's research. When you eat carbohydrates, your body makes more serotonin, the feel-good hormone that is boosted when you are on an antidepresant. Eating the carbohydrates is an attempt to undo the depressed mood.

Carbohydrate Cravings are they Normal or Not?

I do think that craving carbs is quite normal.

Other natural ways to boost serotonin: meditation (a meditation of less than 10 minutes where you simply pay attention to your breath while watching your thumb can seriously improve your serotonin levels), also drinking some tea (sugar and milk free rooibos is great...go South Africa).
Cardiovascular exercise also produces endorphins which also boosts your serotonin production.

Of course, if you suffer from major depression than the best treatment is talk therapy combined with medication.

I sure crave carbs when I am down. And not the healthy kind either! I have found though that even a 15 minute walk does wonders for my mental state, but a cookie makes me tired, and it makes me want another cookie. I think there should be room for carbs in any diet, as long as the relationship with carbs has been established. I have always had ahard time with this ! Great blog :)

this is part of why i went off wheat. wheat is addictive, and things like gluten and lectin make the digestion of it very unhealthy. i still eat baked potatoes and rice, which fill me up and keep me happy (there was actually a book written years ago called potatoes not prozak emoticon ), but i'm staying away from the wheat. already it has made a world of difference...
