Falling For Fitness Challenge - Week One Update

Monday, October 22, 2012

I'm super excited to be participating in the Falling For Fitness challenge! My favourite thing about SparkPeople is meeting new friends and knowing that we're all here for each other through our ups and downs. It's going to be fun working together over the coming months.

I've changed the background image on my Spark page to a sunset on a beach in the Bahamas. It looks like a magical place, doesn't it? I did it in honour of my team for the challenge - Go Bahama Mamas!

Anyway, this week's challenge has a couple of parts and I'm happy to say that I've completed them already! I'm currently wrapping up the Couch to 5K training program so I have set two new fitness goals:
Run at least 30 minutes three times a week
Do two upper body strength training workouts each week

I also completed the bonus challenge which was to read four articles from the "Today in Fitness" section. Here are the articles I checked out what I learned from each one:

"Exercise Safety Tips for Beginners" www.sparkpeople.com/reso

I don't belong to a gym but I do take fitness classes sometimes. I was surprise to read this: "Make sure the gym’s trainers and instructors have been trained and certified by a reputable, national certification agency". It has never occurred to me to ask about the instructor's certification! I always just assumed that they were properly qualified for the job. I live in Canada so the certifications are a little bit different here, but I googled it and we have similar accreditation programs across the country. I'll make sure to ask about the instructor's qualifications the next time I sign up for a class!

"Add Adventure to Your Walks with Geocaching"

I've heard people talking about geocaching before but I never really paid much attention to it. I knew that it involved finding certain spots using a GPS, but I didn't know that there were caches with little treasures waiting to be discovered! The idea of finding and leaving little gifts is really fun. This article really piqued my curiosity and I'd love to try it with my husband and son!

"Workout Tips for Stay-at-Home Parents"

I already do most of the things that were suggested in this article, but I had never heard of Stroller Fit classes before. I run with a jogging stroller, but it would be fun to find out how to incorporate it into a whole workout. I'm going to see if I can find a class in my area next spring!

"Caffeine Before Exercise Could be Risky for Some"
www.sparkpeople.com/reso
urce/fitness_articles.asp?

This article was a real eye-opener for me. I cut caffeine from my diet when I was pregnant and breastfeeding my son but since he has stopped nursing I have started having a cup of coffee once in a while. I was wondering if it would help or hinder my performance on days when I run, and this article answered my question! It can have a negative effect on blood flow so I'll make sure to stay away from it on cardio workout days!

Well, that's my report for Week One. I can't wait to see what next week's challenge will be!
