Joined the Gym

Friday, October 19, 2012

I recently joined the gym on October 9th. I have been pretty good about going- but only feel totally comfortable when I am in there ALONE or with a friend.
So the other night I went in by myself after work (11 pm.) and was glad when i arrived to find I was the only one there.
Well within 10 minutes a girl came in who was very fit and toned (and young) And then approx 15 minutes later in comes 2 guys who were also very fit and toned (and young).
I don't know why- but I start feeling all sorts of self conscious and nervous that people are looking at me. Here I am carrying 20 to 30 extra pounds and twice their age, and not knowing exactly what the heck i am doing!
They all, obviously, know exactly what they are doing- how to warm up, when & how to stretch, how to use all the equipment. And here I am looking all clumsy and uncoordinated!!
I try not to let it bother me because how am I ever going to improve my health and appearance if I am going to let these kind of things bother me. But I guess it does.
I have a couple ideas- either see if I can find someone to go with me who is a little more knowledgeable or make an appt. with one of the workers there to learn how to use all the equipment correctly.

First of all, good for you Amy! It certainly can be quite difficult to get past the feeling of self-consciousness but I like where your head is at. You might also consider asking the younger members questions, too. I have found that most gym members are very willing to answer questions and provide advice when asked. Of course the gym's personnel would also be an excellent resource! Truthfully (and I know that you agree with this) most of the members are too focused on what they are doing and concentrate on what they are doing.
I agree, being able to work out in an empty gym rocks! Only because you don't have to wait for equipment to become available!

    Tough one, Amy.

I bet those other members are more focused on looking at their beautiful selves than at you!

For me, I know that if I joined a gym, it would be a women's only gym, for purposes of modesty. My DH is the only man who can see me in compression pants!

Carry on! Do get some help about using the equipment, and enjoy!
