What was that Miz Sara Lee? Surely I misread...

Wednesday, October 17, 2012

I hate grocery shopping. I hate it even more when I'm not feeling well, and temptation is way too easy to give in to. At my grocery store, to start, you go to the right which leads you directly into the bakery and deli. How horrible is that?!
As I walked through the bakery, I tried to avoid the smells and sights, but I couldn't. Oh, the temptations. But thankfully, I was at the beginning of the trip, and temptation hadn't quite worn me down yet. Guess putting it at the start worked out, for today, at least.
As I kept going on, I saw more and more goodies I had to avoid tossing into the cart. Since I'm still battling fatigue, a taper, bad mood, I've been trying to zero in on things that will make me feel good, both physically and mentally. I loaded up on veggies, fruits, yogurts, light cheeses, nuts, the works. So proud of my cart!

At the end of my trip, the last thing I had to pick up was vita-tops. I grabbed a couple, turned around to head back to the front, and passed a fantastic sale on Sara Lee cheesecakes. Uh, yes please! How could I say no, especially with such a great sale going on? Then I saw a chocolate one. Ooooh. I had to wipe away the drool. Out of curiosity, I took a peek a the nutrition label. Wait, I think I read it wrong. Five what? Five h- Five h- Five hun- yeah, I can't say it. Sorry I didn't take a picture. But you get it. Five hun- yeah, that, for ONE slice. ONE. SINGLE. SLICE. What??!! And that's if you read, count, and slice it into 6 slices. Whoa.
I realized at this point I wasn't going to be taking part of this sale, but I had forgotten something and had to run back to the dairy. Halfway back to the bakery, where I could get two individual slices of cheesecake. One for me, one for hubby. Same price, but so much better for the scale and our health. On my way to the dairy, I weighed my options, and decided I didn't really nded, or even want, the cheesecake. If I hadn't seen that sale, I wouldn't have blinked an eye. It really makes a difference to check labels, and stick to a list. Really cuts down on temptations!

After I got home, I noticed this on my vitatops box. I have to wonder, if more foods, like that Sara Lee cheesecake, put this on the label, would our society have as many weight problems?

Applause to all of you out there who made a healthy choice today, when faced with temptations. Go you!! emoticon

I am shocked at Sara Lee and a little dissappointed. That should be right on the box. I can tell you right now it would stop me in my tracks.

I really like that label! I'd love to see nutritional information laid out in easy to understand ways on packaging and menus. Don't treat it as a horrible thing, but make it something people will actually see and evaluate.

As for the sale thing, it's so hard to pass up savings sometimes, even if you weren't planning to buy in the first place. Do you have something you guys are saving for? When I have one of those little victories where I pass up something I had pretty much decided to buy, I'll actually transfer that amount to my savings account (or take the money out and put it in a jar if you use cash). I mean, the money was spent in your head, but now you have it. A friend did that every time she wanted to buy cigarettes, and ended up being able to buy a plane ticket with all the packs she paid herself for.

Great job making a healthy choice when faced with temptations! When I see 5oo calories for 1 slice, it usually makes me think of time when I never read labels and wouldn't have thought twice about eating the item *shudders*... Glad we have the knowledge now!
    Hope you feel better :)
