Walking with Scooby - October 16, 2012

Tuesday, October 16, 2012

Okay, so here I am, trying something new.. I have finally, after saying I wanted to for a long time, begun taking our chocolate lab Scooby out for walks in the morning. Now, before I get into the nuts and bolts of a morning walk, I should tell you a little about Scooby. He is a 90 lb lap dog who alternates between being a couch potato during the day when we are all out at work and school to being a rather insistent cuddler, who isn't content to just have you pat him, he prods and pushes, and if you let him, will literally end up ON YOUR LAP when you pay the slightest bit of attention to him. What is really interesting is the way he interacts with each of his humans differently. For instance, he is most protective of our son, Tony. If Tony and either myself or my husband Brian happen to be sitting on the couch near each other, Scooby thinks he needs to insert himself between us, again, rather insistently. If it's just Scooby and I at home, he is very content to just flop on the floor in whatever room I am in. However, if poor Brian dares to sit on the couch, Scooby sits in front of him and whines, and this is after he has been fed, given water, given a treat, been outside...he just can't let the poor guy sit..

I love Scooby, but I don't always like him, if you know what I mean. Sometimes his insistence on attention is not welcome, and the constant vacuuming that must occur doesn't always thrill me. He can make a pain of himself when there is human food around, something that drives me wild. But the thing about Scooby that has made me very reluctant to walk him is that he likes to poop on his walks, and I hate cleaning up dog poop! So, after walking him a bit when we first got him several years ago, I gave up on the thought of the daily dog walk because, well, the poop thing... I have considered going online and googling "how to stop your dog from pooping on a walk" but have not yet done so.. perhaps sometime I will and will discuss what I learn..

Anyway, I mentally overcame the obstacle of poop, and began walking Scooby in the morning last week.. Next time, I will talk about how that particular aspect is going. In the meantime, I am happy to say that I am getting out in the morning, breathing some nice fresh air, and keeping Scooby happy. I'm calling that a really good start..
