Green smoothies

Saturday, October 13, 2012

I've been making protein shakes and fruit smoothies for awhile. I tried my first green smoothie yesterday. Another Sparker was excited about it. She said she has more energy and feels great. The fruity sweetness of the smoothie has decreased her desire for sweets.

I don't want something that tastes like veggies. How does V8 add veggies to their fruit drinks and it still tastes fruity? I only added a little spinach. It turned it green. It smelled like spinach. The taste wasn't bad, though I could taste the spinach. The taste would have been horrible if it wasn't slushy cold.
I should have started with carrots. They are frequently added to the commercial veggie-fruit drinks.

I am not ready to give up on the green smoothies yet. Researching on the internet, I am still intrigued and pulled in by the enthusiasm of the posters, spouting all the benefits of green smoothies. Who doesn't want to improve their health and feel better? I can see how this could be addicting. It's a feel-good rush doing something so easy and healthy for myself.

I would also like to try some juicer recipes. My family used to make carrot juice. I wasn't fond of the flavor but it may be better if I juice fruit with the carrot. Any ideas you can share about juicing?

Do you have a favorite veggie smoothie recipe? Do you have a favorite site for veggie smoothie recipes or juicer recipes?

I like to buy frozen fruit (strawberry/mango/pineapple) and blend it with a cup of almond milk, some protein powder, and a couple of ice cubes. The ice cubes seem to make it more frothy - like a milk shake. Yum.

I've experimented a wee bit with adding veggies, like lettuce to my smoothies - told you couldn't taste it - I could. Haven't done it since. I'd rather get my veggies some other way.

Never made a green smoothie. Sorry! I love spinach as a salad or cooked (steamed) to eat, but never put it in a smoothie before.

I make a green drink every morning as a supplement. It's called "All Day Energy Greens" 1 tbs in 6 oz of cold water in the blender. It's got every kind of green food or grass there is I think. alfalfa leaves, barley leaves, yucca root juice powder, raspberry leaves, all kinds of fruit fiber powder, inner peels of oranges. You get the picture. Calories = 34....I feel better when I have one. Although the taste is not something I'd smile about. It does say you can add this powder to your smoothies, but I just have it with water and eat my normal diet.

I have tried green smoothies with spinach, and I really enjoyed them. I think the key is to add strong fruit flavors like banana and strawberry. I've even added chocolate protein powder. Looks nasty, but tastes chocolaty.
