Reasons to Love October

Pumpkin carving ... earlier than Hallowe'en Night this time
It's JJ's favorite time ... have a costume party this year?
Cool-weather trail walks ... no mosquitos!
Picking apples from our ginormous apple tree
Canning apple butter, apple jelly, and applesauce
Going to the spa for hot-room infusions of warmth

I'm trying hard, here, friends. See, October is not my favorite month by any means. To me it heralds the long, dark winter, the cold, the clouds, and the rain. We had a fantastic summer this year, when it finally got started, zero complaints about that! In fact it's still gorgeous, even today, October 1st. But every Fall is the start of a struggle for me to remain in a good frame of mind and see the upside. So this year I'm going to try (with some help) to make a positive difference for myself and my family.

And *you* can help me! Tell me in the comments what you love about this season. I'm going to try hard to listen to my Fall- and Winter-loving friends this year, to let go of my Spring- and Summer-favoring mind and enjoy what is, as much as I can.

Or, if you are like me, not a natural lover of this season, tell me ways you cope! Believe me, I can use all the help I can get.

The crunch of dried leaves under my boots when I'm hiking, the chill in the air that somehow makes it smell cleaner, the edge that is taken away by a pot of hot tea, the sunshine that warms you no matter the air temp, the apples straight from the orchard, ACORN SQUASH!!, the taste and smell of cinnamon or ginger or nutmeg...

I don't know what you people are talking about.

I start gearing up for the Christmas season by making quilts and knitting things to put away for gifts. I like to make things for the Veterans home, the Linus project( sick or traumatized children. another organization is Operation Smile. I've done a quilt that they took to Guatamala for a child that was having surgery for a harelip. There's a lot of fun projects that you can do for charity or for friends and family. In fact, it's starting to get colder, and i'll bet the local homeless shelter would love to receive a warm plate of cookies some afternoon or evening.

Those are great reasons. I didn't go apple picking yet (one of my favorite) and we have an orchard in town but I do enjoy the colors. I just have to remind myself not to bake apple pie!!

Mmmm. Sweaters. That's a very good point. Once upon a time, living in southern California where we thought 65 degrees was "cold", I loved the approaching sweater weather. Maybe that's where I can find some magic this season.

Yup, I totally get it. When I see it get darker earlier and earlier - I think to myself - Oh crud. Winter is coming... So I totally get it.

I am trying to make a plan to keep me focused, so we will see how that works out. Know that you are not alone, gorgeous.

The beauty of the fall colors.
Cooler temperatures after the summer heat.

Other than that I'd just be stretching.... those are my two fav's of this season! LOL

The October grumble list is easier:
Have to rake and bag leaves.
Have to pick up the walnuts that are falling from the trees.
Kids can't play outside as long in the evening.
    Long Pants.

'fraid I'm going to have to be in the "how I cope" camp! I, too, dread the darkening seasons. I love the angles of the sunlight, though, and how crisp and 3-dimensional things look when the sky is blue. I love the colors.

I cope with warm soups! Hot veggies. Sweaters and some exercise. Allergy meds!

And sometimes I slip and fall, and indulge in comfort foods or feeling sorry for myself, sleep a little extra. When I do... I cope by forgiving myself and moving on!
