October Team Challenge: Zombie Kill Points (ZKP)

Sunday, September 30, 2012

Friends, you will never see the worldwide zombie invasion coming. One day your sweet, kind, friendly neighbors will be out raking their leaves, walking their dogs, waving cheerily as they pass by, and the next they'll be scratching madly at your front door demanding brains! The time to prepare is NOW!

Frivolous, you say? Nonsense, I say! Good zombie-invasion preparation is always time well spent! The exercises of body, mind, and spirit that prepare you for an invasion by the drooling undead will prepare you equally well for, say, an invasion by your 3 and 5 year old grandson and granddaughter! So let us begin!

Good invasion preparation includes the following survival elements:

~ Reliable supplies of food, water, medications, supplements, etc.
~ Improved physical strength and agility
~ Improved physical endurance

Let's assume that the undead begin their reign of terror at the stroke of midnight when Halloween ends, that is, 12:00 am November 1, 2012 . That gives us exactly 31 days to prepare and train! Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to first:

DO AT LEAST ONE of the following activities EVERY SINGLE DAY for the month of October, more if you're able:

~ Strength training, especially upper body
~ Cardio training/running/walking/tread
~ Healthy food preparation and consumption (ie. eat on plan)

You choose the intensity and the total time for any and all of these, but set yourself a minimum personal goal.

I hope you like collecting rewards, because you will earn one “ZombieKillerPoint” (ZKP) for each activity completed. By the end of October you should have obtained a bare minimum of 31 ZKP, which will earn you a 10 point goodie from yours truly. :)

BUT THAT”S NOT ALL, FOLKS! Earn extra ZKP by doing any of these fabulous achievements, all of which will strengthen you against your drooling forsaken foes! Repeat any of them as often as you like or set a goal to do them all at least once! You can do as many or as few on any given day as you like. Each counts for one ZKP unless otherwise noted. For every additional 10 ZKP I will award you another 10 point goodie! Or you can ask me to save them up until the end of the month and get a single higher point goodie!

Here are the first few ZKP opportunities. Check back periodically as we add more!

1. Go to a batting cage and work on your zombie-smashing skills. For an extra 2 ZKP try batting with your off-hand as well. Length of time is at your discretion.

2. Try a class or a machine or a type of exercise you've never attempted before. Let us know how it went, for good or ill. You only need to try it once, and you only get 1 point for each new experience, so keep trying a bunch of stuff!

3. Try a freggie you've never had before. Let us know if you found a great way to cook it.

4. Read a health/nutrition/wellness book you've been meaning to check out for a while. Post your thoughts on it. This achievement is worth 5 ZKP because it might take some time. It's worth 10 ZKP if you read "Good Calories, Bad Calories" - LOL!

5. Track your food scrupulously for one week and report any trends or problems you notice.

6. Listen to one of Jimmy Moore's excellent podcasts. Earn 2 extra ZKP if you report on it in the main thread.

7. Read a blog on Mark's Daily Apple. Earn 1 extra ZKP if you report on it in the main thread.

8. Do you take supplements? Regularly? When was the last time you really looked at what you take versus what you need? Take some time to re-evaluate your supplements, adding where necessary, deleting as well, maybe putting some on your shopping list.

9. Eat brains. 10 ZKP. (This one's just for SIMPLEMAW! You know what they say - if you're gonna THINK like a zombie, sometimes you gotta EAT like one!!)

10. Prepare! Do you have an adequate supply of fresh water on hand? You'll need a minimum of at least one half gallon of drinking water per person per day - more in hot weather. Also allow at least one gallon per person for cooking and washing up. A five day supply is great for starters.

11. Golfers rejoice! You can hone your both your golfing skills AND your anti-zombie skills at the same time! Head to a driving range, golf course, or vacant field near your home and practice that beautiful swing. Imagine that the little white ball is a downed but not quite out zombie, and don't forget your follow through!

12. Battery check! Do you have enough juice to run the portable radio, your camping lantern, your multitudes of flashlights? If you use rechargeables, are they recharged?

13. Speaking of radios, do you even have one that doesn't need to be plugged in to the wall or connected to the internet? It may be your only source of outside news if you're barricaded in your house for several days with no power.

14. Get the fun running app called "Zombies, Run!" for iPhone, Android, Windows phone 7, and newer generations of iPod. Works with your own playlist of music. One ZKP for getting it and another every time you use the app.

15. Read the Center for Disease Control's wonderful blog about "Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse" here: blogs.cdc.gov/publicheal
You get 5 more ZKP if you actually take care of everything on the list!

16. Then you can read FlyLady's 11 P's of preparedness here: www.flylady.net/d/gettin
You get 5 more ZKP if you actually take care of everything on the list!

17. Well, Coach Nicole suggested that you sign up for the SparkPeople Fall 5K by September 30, but for many of us it's probably not too late to start training for it. It can be done as a walk, run, or hybrid if you like. God help me, but I'm signing up today. o.O www.dailyspark.com/blog.
How about 2 pounts for signing up and 15 for completing it by the 31st? (I'm more scared of this than of the zombies!!!)

18. If you participate in ANY walk or run event this month award yourself the following ZKP: Marathon = 50 points; Half Marathon = 25 points; 10K = 20 points; 5K = 15 points.

19. Heaven forbid you run into a zombie in close quarters, but if you do, here's hoping you've been working on your boxing skills. You can learn the right cross technique without using a bag, but it's SO much more satisfying if you can find a brave partner to help you: www.youtube.com/watch?v=

20. Exercise with a buddy. Why is this helpful? Well, a little competition goes a long way. Plus, you don't actually have to run faster than the zombie, you just have to run faster than your buddy! 1 ZKP every time you buddy up!
