The Honey Farm
Monday, September 17, 2012
The 3rd Saturday in September is the honey sale at our local honey farm. This year, like years past, I opened the door to enter the sugar shack trying to avoid the honey bees hovering on and about the door. You bring your own container-I take a quart size mason jar. At $1.00 a pound, it cost $6.25 to fill my jar. He also had hand picked shelled black walnuts for $3.50 a bag. And for no charge he shares recipes, remedies and local flavor. I wouldn't miss this for the world!
This past summer I did a study of medicinal herbs. There was a recipe for sleeplessness that adds warm honey to freshly picked lavender.Upon returning home from the honey farm, I picked a bunch of lavender from my garden, washed and sun dried the branches, then picked the newly forming leaflets off the stems, added to my mason jar and poured warm honey over it. I will try this for sleepless nights. Let's hope it works. If not, I will add it to my tea this winter.
