Learned all Steak is Not the Same!

Saturday, September 15, 2012

I am in shock right now! I weighted out my York Strip steak (grilled) and when I put 4oz. on the scales it was so small. So, I went for 8oz. but it in my plate and it still looked small but enough to fill me up. I had a small baked potato and 2 tbb. spoons of sour cream. It looked like a diet meal to me. When I put it into the food tracker I just about fell over. The meat calories was what I had been eating for a nice plate of food and would be full and happy on my reg. days of eating. I always had some kind of meat but didn't go over 4oz. and a big serving of veggies, it would average about 300 to 350 at most for calories. I even ate roast beef , at the most 4 oz. Well, I don't think that the Steak was worth the calories. I got lazy thought that the baked potato in the microwave would be easier. I was cooking for my husband and he has always wanted baked potato with his steak. OK, He can have his baked potato, but I will stick with the veggies. and 3oz. of steak. Also I had put my food in the tracker after I had eaten it because I thought that i had it hands down on how much and what kinds of foods that was healthy to eat. Wow! I got a surprise. I see that I better start checking the foods out when I have not tracked their calories before I but them in my plate and eat them. Learned a lesson tonight.

OK I think I need a new scale...... I have the old style and guess I better invest in a digital.
I am bad about eyeballing amounts and never scale my foods.
OK..... today I start the scales again. TY for sharing and reminding me where to tweak a few things.

Sometimes it is amazing what we find out when tracking. Sometimes it is just plain scary! emoticon

I have been surprised as well with serving sizes and calorie counts. My son finally convinced me to weigh everything instead of measuring each time because the measuring can get sloppy like the 2 Tablespoons of Peanut Butter I would just kind of measure. I meansured the exaxt measurement of 2 Tablespoons and then weighed it in grams and wrote that on the top of the PB jar. It works really well. I can put the plate and piece of Ezekial bread on the scale, zero it out and then measure the grams of PB as I spread them on the bread. This is so much more exact. Then I can zero it out and add the grams of homemade blackberry jam to that, zero it out and add the vegetables. I don't end up dirtying all the measuring spoons and cups this way...just my plate. I found I was eating many extra calories a day with my so so measuring.
