no poo

Friday, September 14, 2012

No poo simply means no shampoo. I've decided to start cleaning my hair without shampoo. And I tried it out today. It worked fine, so I'm very excited about it. We'll see how it goes.

Before you say "Ew, gross!" there are a few things you should know: my hair is clean, it does not stink, I did not slather my head in chemical-laden, overpriced, perfumed, water-based shampoo. Ok, now you can say gross.

The no poo method involves washing your hair with dissolved baking soda and using diluted apple cider vinegar. So, using the stuff I already have in my kitchen, in small amounts.

I'll try this out for a few weeks and give an update on the progress. And if it doesn't work out, I can always go back to my shampoo. I use solid shampoo from Lush (www.lushusa.com), so it's free of harsh chemicals, uses minimal packaging, and is condensed into a bar, so I'm not paying to have a bottle of water shipped across the country (shampoo is pretty much just water).

I should clarify that the baking soda and vinegar do not mix. I typed it up wrong. You wash with the baking soda, rinse thoroughly, then use the vinegar to condition, and rinse thoroughly again so your hair doesn't smell like vinegar.

I work at a hair salon, and the biggest piece of advice the hair stylists have is to wash your hair less and let those good scalp oils nourish your hair like they're supposed to! =] So good for you!

Doesn't that fizz and release fumes? I know you can clean drains by pouring the dry baking sode down them, then follow with vinegar - instant volcano!
