My Cheese Addiction

Tuesday, September 11, 2012

I love cheese. I can eat blocks of cheese: Gouda, Smoked, Cheddar, Colby & Jack. It's my comfort food; when I have just had a frustrating day, I just want to take a block of cheese, chips and salsa, and go to town.

I believe cheese is addictive. I've been successful in going cheese-free for two weeks straight. I think I went through cheese detox - the first few days were horrible and I was just craving it; but after the 1st week, it got better. Every once in a while, I'd get a craving, but was able to resist. The problem was not realizing how many meals we eat that include cheese.

Stop and think about it for a minute: How many of your meals include cheese? Tacos, burgers, pasta, wraps, sandwiches, salads, chilli, pizza, and so many more. Most of our meals are cheese-optional, but it takes getting used to, especially when you've been putting cheese on your tacos since you were a kid.

The past 6 months have been good. I've stopped with the snacking on blocks of cheese and I try very hard to only have one meal with cheese a week (doesn't always work). I've slipped once, about two weeks ago and just immediately regretted it. Took me a few days to stop beating myself up for my lapse.

My name is Laura and I love cheese.

Boy oh boy, can I relate! I grew up in a household where there were no fewer than 5 kinds of cheese in the house at any one time. Seven years ago I discovered dairy was no friend to my body so I've finally weaned myself off it. I do feel much better but every now and then I give in. One meal with cheese and I"m fighting the cravings again. One tip I learned: make sure you're getting enough omega-3's in your diet. It really helps to reduce those cheese cravings.
