Fall, Burnt Plastic and Day Trips.....

Tuesday, September 11, 2012

So, the past couple of days the weather has been absolutely perfect. Mid seventy's and very low humidity. It's definitely been a good sign that fall is on it's way. Also the perfect time to get some walking and house cleaning in. My Mom and I went for a 2 mile walk today around the azalea bed section of a local park. It was so beautiful out. After our walk and stretching we decided to collect some of the nicer acorns laying around and use them as fall decoration. We will be putting out 1 acorn for every mile we walk between now and Thanksgiving. It will be so fun to see how many we've got by then. We plan on going for another wonderful walk in the same spot tomorrow as well. Here are a couple of pictures from our walk today.

So, after our walk I was SO refreshed and all perked up. My Mom dropped me back off at home and I walk in the house to this odd smell of something burning. I then noticed lots of smoke had filled the whole downstairs and immediately panicked and ran to the kitchen first to see if it was coming from there. I had started the dish washer before I went on my walk and when I looked at it I noticed a thick steam/smoke coming out of the vent that lets the steam out when it's drying the dishes. Well, I opened it and the smell was SO much worse than what was in the rest of the house. I pulled out the bottom rack and saw what was left of a big plastic serving spoon. I've been putting this spoon in there for 3 years now (so I know it's dishwasher safe). How it fell down underneath of everything onto the heating element, I'll never know. Luckily my Mom decided to get out of her car a minute after I discovered this, because she wanted me to have some of the acorns that we picked up on our walk. She walked in and said "What is that smell" and proceeded to help me get the remnants of the spoon out of the dishwasher. We then opened the windows in the downstairs and went to my Grami's to visit while my house aired out. I cam home an hour after and the smoke was gone but the smell was definitely still there. I proceeded to spray Febreeze everywhere, put some vanilla in a dish and heated it up in the oven, put vinegar in various spots, baking soda and vinegar in the dishwasher and I have lit a Yankee Candle wax melt to help as well. I had just cleaned and aired out the house yesterday and it was feeling and smelling SO amazing in here and now this happened. As my Mom said "It's Murphy's Law". That's so true. O well, I'll get my house back to smelling amazing soon.

On to another happy note. My Mom and I had a wonderful time on our day trip to Yorktown and Williamsburg. We had lunch at an amazing seafood restaurant on the York River, with the most amazing view. We had a nice walk along the beach and then took off to the Yankee Candle Village store in Williamsburg. O how I love that place. So many wonderful little shops and food and decorations. My favorite part is the Christmas room. It has all sorts of ornaments and decorations and tons of Christmas trees set up and decorated everywhere. There's even a room where Santa is year round. My absolute favorite part of that room is that it snows every 4 minutes, although this trip it seemed to have been broken. O well, I've seen it before and I'm sure I'll see it again the next time. Here are a few pictures from our trip.

Next month my Mom and I are planning a day trip to the mountains to go apple picking at a local orchard in Charlottesville. Fresh apple cider and apple donuts along with a nice sandwich and some apple picking. That along with the leaves changing colors along the mountains, will make for a perfect and o so fun fall outing. I can't wait. I just love fall SO much. emoticon

wow what a beautiful adventure you and your mom had.

sorry about the spoon and dishwasher.... that has happened to me soooo many times. Either it is a utensil or a lid or something falls on the heating element in the dishwasher. I imagine that the spraying water is soooooooooooo strong that it flipped the item to the back of the dishwasher and it floated to the bottom by the heater.

glad you are both okay and that your HOUSE was okay :-)

Beautiful blog Ashley, thanks for sharing those very special Mom and Daughter days with us! I love the photos!
I agree with your mother about Murphy's Law cause it always does seem that if something can go wrong, it WILL! But lucky it is just an off odour and not a fire that could have destroyed your home, so . . . all is well.
I'll be looking forward to more of your blogs and do let us know how those acorns are piling up the miles! What a great way to do that!

Thanks so much for sharing your day , loved the pictures.

Sorry about the burning spoon--- some how the darn thing fell. Just play it safe from now on and leave that kind of stuff for hand washing.

I would love to sharing a day like that with my daughter.
