My first 5K in Memory of my Best Friend
Tuesday, September 11, 2012
Robin was my best friend for 25 years. We met when she was 19 and I was 20. I had just moved to the Quad Cities in February 1984. (The Quad Cities are 4 cities that border the Mississippi River in Iowa and Illinois). We hit it off right away and became best friends. When I needed a place to stay in the summer of 1985 I moved in with her and her husband. Not only did we live together, we also worked at Kmart together. I was the maid of honor at her wedding and she was the matron of honor at mine. When I got married the only family I had in the area was my sister so it was Robin's Mom who walked me down the aisle.
Robin was a very tiny person. When we met she was wearing a size 14 little girls slim. She could always eat whatever she wanted and not gain weight. Me on the other hand was short and round. She accepted me the way I was and was always so much fun to be around. We would have girls night out and go to the local bars that had bands and would dance all night. Whenever we were together we would talk for hours and hours. No one else could get in a word.
When my husband wanted to move to Colorado in 1992 to be near his Dad, Robin and I would plan our vacations each year around visiting each other. Moving great distances had always been a part of my life since I grew up in the military as an Air Force Brat. Our friendship remained even though we lived 12 hours apart by car.
In the summer of 2009 Robin passed away from Breast Cancer 1 month before her 45th birthday. So when I got to work yesterday and everyone in my work area was signing up for the Susan G. Komen Race for the cure I didn't have to think very long before I joined too. Our company pays the entry fee for the first 85 employees that sign up. It seems so right that on my journey to a healthier life that my first 5K will be in her memory.
I miss her very much and whenever I see a Robin bird in my yard I feel that she is watching over me.
