Day 19: Splurge

Monday, September 10, 2012

Well, another day of hard labor out in the yard and the raised beds are in! The trellis is also almost complete at this point. The beds will remain empty until we can afford the soil to fill them (still have a hard time swallowing the fact that I have to pay for DIRT!). I am relieved that we have come this far. This project was part of the deck that we started (and bought the lumber for) a year ago. Things always take longer than you think they will...

I made a few mistakes today. The first is one I am trying hard not to kick myself over too much. I bought the lumber for these beds more than a year ago with a very specific plan in mind. Unfortunately my memory is shot and I had no drawing of this brilliant plan. And of course I didn't REMEMBER the plan until the beds were in place. No wonder I had leftover lumber! I forgot some pretty significant design details. Lesson to be learned: Don't buy supplies for a project you may not get to unless you have something drawn up!

The second mistake I made was that I waited too long to eat lunch ("I'll stop for lunch as soon as I finish this neeeeext step..."). Then I skipped my afternoon snack. As a result, I was famished for dinner and felt an overwhelming urge to cheat on my cleanse. My justification was that we had worked so hard and we had to celebrate! I didn't pig out too badly, but I did eat things that were definitely NOT on my cleanse list. Lesson to be learned here: Deprivation leads to binging. I know this one already. I need to eat often, especially when I am eating mostly just veggies (no staying power).

So, I guess this was a day of learning. Hope soon I will start feeling smarter instead of dumber after days like these!

Check in your area to see if the city or county has a composting site..they do in larger town near us..and they give their composted dirt free..but some charge but maybe cheaper...The town this is in has horse racing so they put in horse manure from the tracks and it is wonderful stuff and would be worth paying for..
