Down the scrubs

Sunday, September 09, 2012

My bestie came over for lunch today. I used to cook megacalories for lunch, cream sauces on everything and enormous puddings with more cream and much chocolate. Today we had gazpacho, tagliatelle with spicy prawns and cherry tomatoes, and fruit salad. So far have I come.

Not far enough, however. I should have tracked everything before eating it shouldn't I? Went over by 100 calories, didn't I?

Well, before you all start to foam at the mouth and go purple in the face, I'd like to say we did go for a 90 minute walk in 75F heat, along the canal to Wormwood Scrubs. I had my camera with me, natch.

We were walking along and there were firemen playing with their hose:

But mostly it was just cyclists, joggers, walkers and boat people on their boats.

This bit is opposite Kensal Green cemetery. I love the poplars, which are very rustly. The wind had really got up, but it was a warm wind, unusual in the UK at any time of year, but in September . . . unheard of. People were out and about and there were loads of boats. Mostly they are permanently moored because people live in them. I commented to bestie that there seems to be a kind of alternative lifestyle ethos along the canal and she looked amused and mentioned that the people we had just passed had been talking about double glazing. On their boats, presumably. So we kept going and eventually came out near Wormwood Scrubs.

Ah, the Scrubs. Mention the name to your average Brit and they think of the jail there. In fact, it's a huge piece of common land, mainly grass and so big it magnifies the sky for you. I had a weird experience shortly after this. I wanted to show bestie where I used to live, haven't been there in 10 years.

So we trotted along and . . . the building - which had been due for renovation - has been demolished. There's a huge and expensive looking block of flats instead.

The things that happen when your back is turned!

So we walked along to the bus stop and that's where things went wrong for me in calorie terms. Bestie bought water to drink. I had iced tea. The bottle wasn't pearshaped to warn me, but it should have been. 150 calories, 100 of which I hadn't actually got.

So to make up for that, I'm off down the gym tonight. As well as a 4 mile walk.

So nice! We have a canal here with a lot of history around it in the 1960's! Out in the country-not city like this! It was a canal the government wanted to build so boats could go through FL instead of around it! It was shut down and never completed due to envoirnmental concerns later! So now we have nice paths and fishing areas and places for boaters! We love it! Glad you had a nice visit! And got in some good exercise! Going over a hundred isn't that bad, but you have the right attitude! If you keep doing that, it will backfire on you!!! But, if you don't lose much weight, and you continue with all that exercise, make sure you eat enough calories. Coach Nicole eats up to 1700-2100 calories a day! I exercise and burn 3000-4000 calories a week and SP always tells me I don't eat enough by the end of the week-and my calorie count is around 2000!
    Keep going! Doing great!!! emoticon

Sounds like a lovely lunch, and a great walk. Have a good workout at the gym. I'm sure between that and the walk, you'll have sweated off those puny 100 calories in a heartbeat!

Ok, so to paraphrase Donkey in the first Shrek movie, "Can I live with you???" Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!! Oh, I have beautiful places by me, too, but's there's something about the light and the green of England that is SO different!

Your lunch sounded lovely. You walked AND went to the gym??

Great job on lunch. Don't torture yourself over the iced tea! Lesson learned. Next time you'll double check the calories. You're getting in lots of exercise. Terrific!

I have to laugh when you talk about 75F heat. It's 7:30 at night and 77F, finally! We were out an hour ago and I had a sweater on. It's all a matter of perspective, isn't it?

Your pictures, as always, are wonderful. It looks like you had a gorgeous day! It's always shocking to go back to where you used to live. The people who moved into the house I grew up in added an extra story to the house. It's disorienting when things are out of place and not at all like what you remember.

I love the pictures. It feels like I am walking right beside you. My pictures always come out awful. I plan my meals a week ahead of time. This helps with saving money at the grocery store so I only buy what I need. It really does help.

100 calories over as a one-off is neither here nor there. You seem to be having a real Indian summer - lovely, and plenty of opportunity for walking!
