Cardio Streak Day 494
2.40 mile walk /jog
0530hrs 67F

Friday will be the 500th consecutive day for cardio and I plan to take a cardio day-off on Saturday!

The weather guys have been saying that today starts the cold front. They were right - the temp is down in the 60s this morning! I had breakfast, no-name water, and got out of the house for a little 2.4 mile walk/jog. Nothing serious, just enough to keep the streak going for another six days.

As you know, I've been doing strength workouts at the new job. A few years ago, one of my friends (a doctor), commented on my weight and asked how many pushups I could do. Well, actually, his question was, "Can you do a pushup?"

"A" pushup implies one, a single, a set of 1. I was a little put-off by the question even though my weight at the time was in the very obese category. I assured him I could but he didn't ask me to demonstrate.

When I went home that day, I got down on the floor and did a pushup. Well, that's not exactly correct... I "tried" to do a pushup, unsuccessfully. Not many years before that, I worked at a place with a mandatory fitness test every six months and I used to do 60 of them in a minute, just for fun. It really ticked me off when I couldn't do even one.

So this week I added pushups at home in addition to the bench press sets I've been doing at work. Yesterday I put my feet in a chair and my hands on the floor and ripped off multiple sets of 15 decline pushups - nose to the floor each time!!!!

Oh I'm not writing this to brag (can't you tell?), but I'm really happy I can do those again after all these years. Yep, I did light strength training during the 365 day portion of the cardio streak, but since I've hit maintenance, I've switched gears to more strength and less cardio. It's nice, and I'm feeling a little smug, haha.

I plan to rest today from strength and will begin again tomorrow with the weight room at work. I used to consider weight training as something that needed to be done, a chore. Not exactly hate, I've changed my mindset and I'm liking it now. As with cardio, just do a little every day or so and it adds up!

My cardio total for today:
2.4 miles
30 minutes

Interestingly enough, I'm in fourth place on total mileage for the virtual team which began on 15April this year. It just goes to show, you don't need massive amounts of distance to get massive results! However, if you want to see the top three members on the virtual team, check out their pages/blogs and feel free to add them if you haven't already done so:

I'm working up to doing push ups on my stability ball. It makes them much harder than the modified ones I normally do.
