Long-term Goals: the Big Picture

Monday, September 03, 2012

So why am I doing this? I know the reasons I started this weight loss journey in 2008, but those reasons aren't my reasons now in 2012. I am now the rockin' athlete I could hardly imagine. Just not at goal weight, but dang, I've surprised people by what all I've taken on and made happen. Me not only running a 10K but 2 half marathons so far. 2 sprint triathlons, several open water swims followed by 5K's. I'm living the happy casual racer life.

So what do I want? I want to be faster. To be able to take on a race and do it hard and not have my body collapse after that. That's my current reality. I had a great summer of races, but when the big one the sprint triathlon happened late July, I went for it, loved getting to push my body hard. Then my body went kerplewey. Right rear shoulder impingement leading to physical therapy I'm still needing. Mild right IT band syndrome which I think is basically behind me.

So I want to get buff and strong this coming year. To let me race at the intensity I want to compete. No fantasies of placing in my races, just pushing it as hard as I want.

The plan:
Once cleared by my physical therapist for weight training, I'll talk to the Y staffer overseeing our tri team to have her match me to a trainer there. I want to train once a week with that trainer and to have a second set to work through independently.
Resume yoga or start Pilates with Nicki.
Keep the running thing going through the winter. No piddling out after the Big Sur race right before Thanksgiving.
After the Big Sur race, decide if I want to do the Mermaid Half Marathon in San Diego and if so to convince Janet and maybe Laurie to do it with me.
I want to have 13 significant athletic events in 2013. Not all races because there's a major hike I want to join in on.
Lose more of this weight to get me faster and to build my endurance. This is the weird mental bit. Imagining the weight loss, but I'll just keep imagining it 5 pounds at a time and see where that leads.

What will accomplishing that plan lead to? Me looking pretty darn fine. And me coming up with my training goals for 2014.

You are most definitely a "rockin' athlete".... For Real! I love how structured and determined you are. I wonder... were you like that when you were younger? I mean striving for goals, pushing yourself, determined, ect.? Just wondering because you seem to be good at it! You set a goal and go for it. So many people set goals such as a big race but let things get in the way. You are a superhero in my eyes!

Can't wait to follow you and your goals! I have no doubt you'll be on a roll in 2013.

These are some amazing plans!! Getting better is always the goal, isn't it? I love that even though I am getting older, I can still get better. I might need to wiser and go about it a bit slower, but I still see improvement and that is good!

Nice way to look ahead. It's also a great way to set yourself up to finish this year out strong. No, there'll be no piddlin' out after your Nov. Half.
