Bellydancing for Free through The New York Public Library

Monday, September 03, 2012

Well, I recently got my first New York Public Library card in four years. Ever since I'd taken the job that requires a lengthy outer-borough to outer-borough commute (each has their own public library, the circulating collection of one of which is idiosyncratic; the other uninspired), I'd thought, "What's the point?" - and so I'd let my NY Public library card lapse and, finally become misplaced ...

But, there is a greater than zero chance that the company I've worked for the past few years, will relocate to Manhattan ... not much greater than zero because there'd been talk for the better part of a year on that. Not being on Facebook freed up a little time and cognitive space ... it was time to take care of unfinished business.

Well, since I had no New York Public Library activity in over 4 years, and they switch things around every three years - they did not charge me the replacement fee to get a new card. Right after the new card's issuance, I'd hit the DVD stacks like I'd just been let out of jail ... I found bellydance lessons on DVD that I kept renewing ... they seem to favor the instructor, Amira Mor, and sprinkle-spray her offerings spanning two Dewey Decimal classification numbers: 613.71 (for health: aerobics) and 793.483 (for indoor games & amusements) ... It takes a libarygoer with a detective's snout to ferret out the offerings ... I am just that librarygoer. [Probably all those years of long-term unemployment and I transferred my bookstore-browsing-under the radar from the "May I help you" brigade in the years before and during the process whereby Amazon.com crushed most of this "third place" (a.k.a. hangout) existence of the mega-bookstores ... lol]

Indoor Games and Amusements? One part of me wonders if Wii has a belly dancing "game" in the works ... or might that be too risque for the kids who might use this family-oriented "fitness game" ...

Anyway, I have to say ... with all these freebie offerings

[of course, I have to put them into my DVD player and use them; but now that air conditioning has been restored to my apartment--a pleasure]

They certainly give me a better workout (of course I modify--DOWNWARD--a little. Yoga class at the wannabe trendy chain I last was registered at 2 years ago gave me a PhD in Down-modification!). Moreso than most of my downloads in thatbellydance genre which were curated for their user friendliness ... THESE are not curated for anything but the fact that they were easy to acquire by some librarian (i.e. donated by someone - probably a castoff from an estate ..)

The New York Public Library: home of some hidden gems ... and the best library ever!

In only a few weeks, I found a belly dance DVD I really love (Dewey Decimal 793.3 ((which means long lost cousin to the Wii Fit)). I get about a 15% discount on it at Amazon ... I will own that sucker!

I love using the library as a resource to preview videos. It's a way to avoid wasting a whole lot of money. Do you by any chance have an e-book? I download books from our local library all the time, and thus avoid the drive over there. This is especially nice when the library would be closed anyway.

    I emoticon The public library!
