Hurricane Party! Or, Sheltering in Place, Sort Of

Wednesday, August 29, 2012

Okay, so Isaac is still crawling toward us, nearly a direct hit by the eye, if he stays on his current track. Only, it's a weak, unorganized storm, that has just "wobbled" to the west, to quote the meteorologist, so the wind impact here will be less than it otherwise might've been. However, moving this slow, it's building up a huge storm surge and water levels along the central Gulf coast continue to rise visibly, and the storm is dumping 2"/hour all over much of the area.

Since Isaac slowed his forward momentum, some things have been happening here. My church building is now housing 14 of us (and 6 dogs) who feel safer here than in houses with old, skinny, very tall pine trees surrounding them. Of the 14, 5 are teenagers & 2 are pre-teens. So, we brought food that needs to be eaten, snacks to while away the boredom, computers & gadgets (obviously!), hobbies (mine is crochet), etc. We've all been here since late last night. So far, we haven't lost power, but surrounding areas have over 200,000 people without power, and the winds are too strong for safety, so electricity repair crews won't be going out for at least a day or more to some places.

Today, the menu has been as follows:
B'fast - Karen's Company Eggs (eggs & milk, bread, bacon, sausage)
Snacks - anything and everything bad for you, salty, sweet, full of fat, etc.
Lunner - Spaghetti & Meat Sauce that a friend of the church made and dropped off for us, along with Domino's Garlic Bread Sticks (& I steamed some veggies for me any my friend, no one else wanted them)
Dessert - Tiramisu (from the same friend)
Surprise Treat - clerk from the bakery across the road from the church knocked on the door this morning and asked if we were sheltering at the church, and if we'd like a bunch of treats. We said, "SURE!", and in walked 2 large bakery boxes of miscellaneous petit fours (5 dz/box), a whole decorated cake and a bakery box full of miscellaneous pastries.

So...........given the day's events, I've way over-eaten. emoticon But, I've also done a lot more physical activity than is "normal" for a day (for me, that is). I'm not happy with my numbers on the nutrition front, and I don't even know how to quantify a lot of it (picked a generic "party food" option, but there's no nutrition breakdown, just calories), but it's done. It's been a fun day, I don't feel icky (which is a good marker for me), and I'm not swollen like a water balloon. And, we were sitting around, listening to some great rock and latin music and I just decided to dance. emoticon For about 20 min, I boogied and samba'd, while my friends' kids looked at me funny. emoticon Like I said, it was a fun day. emoticon

I also tried 2 different flavored vodkas...sweet tea vodka (great on the rocks) & cucumber vodka (makes an awesome bloody mary!). So...yeah, too much food, too much of the WRONG foods, booze, and dancing. What a day! hehe emoticon

Hurricane Party!! I'm in Lafayette, we're just sitting tight waiting for this mess to hit us (right now it's still out south of Baton Rouge, heading our way). Can't wait for it to pass already... I don't like waiting!

My thoughts and prayers are with you. Stay safe. Track the best you can but don't worry too much about it. It is an event out of your hands. Sounds like you are exercising away some of those extra calories anyways. I also love to crochet. Just made a baby blanket for a co-worker. She had her baby yesterday. Little girl. 7 pounds 7 ounces. She wasn't due until labor day but the baby had its own time table. emoticon
