Muscle Mania

Saturday, August 25, 2012

A week of rest! The pool has been drained, cleaned, repainted and is now filling up. It'll be ready for Monday and my Masters Swim team will be the FIRST to jump back in the pool since we swim at 5 AM. We call it the Pee Free pool swim since the little ones have not had a chance to give the chlorine a run for its' money yet. I could have swam at another Y in the area during this closed week as some of my teammates have. But I decided to give rest to my still fractured pelvic ring. Eight weeks and it's still cracked!

The lack of exercise is taking its toll. When I was couch bound, I lost 7 lbs which means, I lost 7 lbs of muscle! I've gained back 5 of those pounds since being off the crutches (it came back RAPIDLY!). That means I'm 2 lbs less than before the accident, but most of my clothes do NOT fit! I can't even zip or button most of my pants! The few I can, I have to wear a tight girdle in order to do it! My muscle tone has really collapsed. Sad! Trying to be patient is driving me crazy! Yet, I really need to take it slow and obey the doctors orders. It's so hard, but the LAST thing I want is a set back!

PLAN:

Be thankful for what I can do. I have a wide green light to swim and have been swimming until this past week with the closure. Get back in the pool 3X a week and mix it up with water walking/jogging. There are no triathlons for me to train for this year, so the yardage does not matter. Have fun and PLAY!

The good doc has also told me I can get on a stationary bike with a wide seat and cycle away. I hate indoor cycling and rat machines (the dreadmill...I mean, treadmill). I asked if I could start riding my hybrid bike in the neighborhood. He said to wait one month because the bone was still too tender. That means, Sept. 15th I can try assuming I'm not in pain. So to put up with the boring indoor cycle deal, I will sign up for the Sept. 1st work challenge "Walking Works". It's a walking challenge contest between all the schools in our school district. But you don't have to walk! Other activities count as well and they have a conversion chart for the time you put in on other activities to convert to walking miles. I love contests, and maybe this will ease the boredom I feel with indoor cycling.

Keep drinking my non fat milk 3X a day and get my vitamin D as the doctor ordered. Getting the minimum daily requirements aides in bone healing and I confess, I probably was not getting that in earlier. I am now! Eight weeks since the accident and it's still cracked? It should have been sealed over by now. No more delays!

Remain optimistic. Be thankful for the fact that I WILL heal and can walk and be able to do what I've done before some day.

I'm having the same problem with my clothes, sigh. I am getting back in the work out rhythm but it's slow going. When did we get this old?

I can imagine the doc is right about riding. Seems like that would make you ache afterwards. I hope you can get back in the saddle soon!

"Rat machine?" LOL I love it! I've never heard a dreadmill called a rat machine before, but it makes sense... rats on a wheel!

Sounds like you have a good plan... hopefully you'll get back into your pants soon. Sounds like it really isn't weight gain that's caused the problem, more like change of body composition. Once you get back into your routine, I bet that problem goes away pretty quickly! Good luck!
