Waiting out the storm

Thursday, August 23, 2012

I messed up my back almost a month ago. Stretched it out, kept going as it loosened up. Heating pad, ice, ibuprofen. Restored our house following foundation repair, ran a mile, painted a couple of rooms. The pain came back every few days, lasting longer and hurting more until I could barely move. Getting out of bed felt like the agonies of hell. Picking up my big toe to step sent off a wave of pain all over my back. My shoulders and neck were frozen in fear of moving and causing more pain. Two doctor's visits, much medication, finally an injection that worked. Crying, feeling sorry for myself battling with "hang in there, you've been hurt before, you've healed and rebuilt." Most of the storm seems to have passed. I've been mostly free motion for 2 1/2 days, no knock you out pain meds! Today, I walked 2 miles (running is out for a while). Tonight, I'll take a muscle relaxer to make sure my back muscles don't seize up while I'm lying down. If tomorrow I can move normally, I might even go wild and skip the muscle relaxer! I'm still afraid to move sometimes, wondering if the agonies of hell pain will revisit. I so hope to get back in the pool tomorrow, feeling healthy and strong, enjoying the motion of my body. Here's irony: I've lost a pound; hopefully it's not muscle mass :)

Hope that you can feel fully "fit" soon....without the meds, if possible....but if that isn't possible, that the minimum amount of meds does the maximum amount of relief.
