What is sexy?

Saturday, July 28, 2012

A couple weeks back this question was posted on the Summer 5% Challenge message board and quite truthfully I had no idea how to go about answering it. I never really think in terms of sexy. Cute maybe. Handsome maybe. But not sexy. I work in a community where the people whose children I teach act like sexy means plastic surgery, big diamonds and bigger SUVs, and fine wines over lunch. Out of 33 school districts, however, we rank 28 in terms of pay and benefits, so there's no fear that I will ever live in their neighborhoods or live their lifestyles, which is really fine and dandy by me (except for the fact that I haven't had a raise in over 4 years - I am topped out on our payscale with 21 years in the district). But I digress. In the past 48 hours I've discovered my vision of sexy. So bear with me.

Two evenings ago DH won tickets from the local radio station to see a "Private Listerner's Concert" with the Lumineers. We're not big on being out at nite, much less far from home (downtown is "far from home - 25 miles -if you are DH), but being that it is summer and the concert was free, we decided to splurge with a nite out. I loved every moment! We were surrounded by people who were genuinely down to earth - casually dressed, eager to share their tables, apologetic if they backed into you or stepped on your toes, and no where was there any evidence of wealth or one-up-manship. We're talking happy-to-meet you types of people. Sexy. And dang, the music was pretty good, as well!

And then I saw it again in the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. The twinkling in the eyes of the athletes. Their uncontained smiles. The pure joy of being in a crowd of like-minded people who were living their dreams. Sexy. As each athlete made their way into the stadium, I marveled with them and could feel their excitement and happiness to have made it to this point. That to me is pretty darn sexy.

Side note: I fell in love with the "Independent Olympic Athletes" - three men and one woman. Did you see them? I can't wait to follow them!

It's funny on how people perceive things. Sounds like you are very well grounded. I have always been the person who would rather be comfortable than someone else's idea of what I should look like. Do the girl students at your school wear make-up or dye their hair? If I remember right you work at an elementary school. There are girls here who do just that. Make up and hair dye in grade school. Some of older dd's friends wanted to dye her hair in 6th grade the night before they started the 1st day of school. I let them curl it and that's it.
I'm not sure why women in particular do all that stuff to themselves. The men around here just soon their wives not bother with makeup, wear glasses, and put the bling away. I think we do this to each other for up-man-ship.
Hooray for those who realize sexy is just being yourself and not worrying about what other people think! emoticon

I agree with you 100%, people who do not think of themselves as sexy ARE.
