Sometimes You Just Have to Rest

Friday, July 27, 2012

I had every intention of walking for 5 days this week. In my walking program I'm now in the part where there is a 4 day week and then a 5 day week and they alternate. The past two 5 day weeks I have only gotten in 4 days. This week was going to be different. I was supposed to rest last night but we have an event to go to tomorrow and we're working the Brewer game on Sunday so my long 12 mile walk has to be in the morning tomorrow. I was going to go to the state park with my friend at about 8 a.m. but we have to be at the event by 2 and I'd need to shower and we want to leave by 12:30 at the latest. The 12 mile walk took us 3 hours and 40 minutes last time so we won't have that kind of time.

My knee was sore after the 14 mile hike last Sunday but not too bad. I was able to do my run/walk intervals on Tuesday and then the walk on Wednesday just sucked because it was too hot/humid out. Last night I walked 3 miles and it was fine. I gave blood at work yesterday so I'm a little more tired today - no biggie.

I have this baker's cyst in my knee at the back and it feels like it's interfering with the movement of a tendon and the tendon is scraping back and forth in and out of place across it. In the mornings when I stretch upon waking up it has been popping/cracking a bit but not too bad. Well this morning I woke up and stretched my legs. I felt a pop and then my knee started to hurt. It's been a little swollen (where I can FEEL it but not really see it) all day and feels like I can't QUITE straighten it all the way. I came home and sat on some ice, intending to rest for a bit and then do an upper body workout.

Well, I fell asleep on the couch! My body is obviously telling me I need to rest so I am. Sitting my butt on the couch all night and drinking water instead of snacking like a fool! (That is why I exercise at night - so I have something to DO instead of eat!) Anyway, still texting with my friend as to whether we're going REALLY early at 6 a.m. or something or if I'm walking close to home. I'll update later. Have to check out when the park gates open!

Have a great weekend everyone!

You are doing terrific. We really do need to listen to our bodies when they tell us they need rest. Be confident that resting and getting back up to speed will happen before you know it. Be patient. Hope you are having a great weekend! Keep up the good work! Thanks for the encouragement! Spark on! emoticon

Congratulations on resisting the temptation to snack, choosing water instead of snacks... I tend to be an evening snacker... so I keep healthy snacks around.... and drink lots and lots of water!!! Have a great day!

Definitely sounds like the rest day was much needed! I hope your knee feels better soon. Injuries are so frustrating!

Kudos to you on listening to your body. Good to know that we're at a point when exhaustion is a real reason to skip a workout and not an excuse!

    Hope your knee starts cooperating!
