Low carb pride!

Sunday, July 22, 2012

I was (and still am) going to write an entry about how I'm doing on low carb/no wheat today. Instead, I want to brag on some acquaintances of mine, "Roy" and "Becki". When I met them in 2010 they each had a good 50 pounds to lose and generally looked...well, not the picture of health. Roy in particular had the classic distended "wheat belly" and I was genuinely concerned about the state of his heart. When they saw how much success I was having last year with my way of eating, they decided to follow a similar plan. Last time I saw them was earlier this past winter, and they had each lost around 15 pounds. We got together with them tonight for her birthday and they have lost 45 pounds apiece! They admitted to missing bread and pasta (as I still do sometimes) and said that sometimes it wasn't easy to stay on track, but they were glad they did. They look healthy and happy and to be honest, much younger as well. Becki said that her doctor isn't "yelling" at her anymore. I'm so proud of them!

I've been pleasantly surprised at how supportive and understanding everyone in my life has been. The only resistance I've seen was on the SP message boards. I figure it's because they have never met me, so they weren't able to see the changes in my body and health. Everyone who knows me in person both before and after low-carb has been very interested to know more about what I've been doing.

That's fantastic! And it makes a rather pleasant change from people thinking you're an absolute nutter for not eating "normal food".

That's so wonderful you have been an inspiration to people around you! I'm sure many of us who were once the dreaded 'obese' word thought it was hopeless. You are giving hope to the hopeless!

Before my wedding, my best friend said she wanted to lose some weight and asked me how I did it. I told her I quit eating so much rice, pasta, potatoes, bread and sugars. She lost 30lbs before my wedding, and was so happy! She looked amazing!

I've found that I can enjoy rice, pasta, potatoes, and bread on occasion (as I did this past weekend), but I'm no longer trying to follow the advice to have 3 servings of 'whole grains' per day. That was a recipe for storing fat for me.
