Fearing Fear Itself
Daily Inspiration

I want to talk to you today about something that is very common and very debilitating. It is also one of the primary reasons many people’s dreams remain unfulfilled. It creates occasional anxiety for some and is a constant daily companion for many others. In a word, it’s FEAR! Fear is that feeling of anxiety, uneasiness and apprehension that convinces us time and time again to back away and retreat from our dreams and desires. Even though it has no physical form or concrete structure, it creates an impenetrable obstacle to those who carry it with them. If this talk of fear is hitting a little too close to home for you, it’s time to confront your fear and move forward with your life.

Fear is but a feeling, and is merely the result of projecting your negative thoughts of something catastrophic happening into the future. Yes, it is indeed a very powerful feeling full of dread and disastrous expectations, but it is only a feeling nonetheless. It can’t hurt you unless you allow it to. You may remember that famous quote by Franklin D. Roosevelt in his first inaugural address in 1933: “So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself – nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.”

If you are paralyzed by fear and are avoiding doing something you desperately want to do because of this trepidation, take action! Once you do the thing that is causing the fear and you emerge unscathed you’ve figuratively extinguished a fire. In my opinion, fear is really only a mental frame of mind that blurs your vision and clouds your judgment. Once you confront that fear by taking action and pressing through it, a whole new world will open up to you. So, I say be scared but do it anyway, because it’s the action that will eventually eliminate the fear!
