Purging... (no, not that kind!)

In addition to working on dropping weight and getting healthy, I've put myself on a "stuff" diet. I'm purging and organizing all of my closets, cupboards, drawers, garage, and any other spot that tends to collect "stuff". I made an accountability pact with a friend - we check in with each other (usually by email) every Monday and Thursday to report on our actions accomplished since the last check-in. We agreed that, because our lives tend to be more busy and complicated some weeks than others, we get to define for ourselves as we go what constitutes an "adequate" action step that meets our expectations of forward movement. So sometimes we might report on completing a whole closet, sometimes a section of a closet, other times just a small drawer. But it's all "Success" since we're moving forward. The accountability with my friend really helps me to hold the focus. If I were doing this on my own, I would likely have lost momentum and stopped by now.
My motto as I go through each space is "Be Ruthless!" As I hesitate with something in my hand, deciding whether it goes back in the closet or not, those two words re-inspire the boldness it sometimes takes to live a lean lifestyle. I've made many trips to Goodwill already, and filled lots of trash bins. It's liberating to let go of so much stuff. And life is getting easier, as the stuff I do want is more within view and easy reach. I went to the Container Store and splurged on some pretty organizing bins and cool gadgets, such as:
I sometimes enjoy just opening a cupboard or closet to look at it now! I have a loooong way to go, but the progress I've made is creating its own momentum, and I've developed sort of a system now and I actually look forward to tackling each new space.
